Two impaired drivers located back-to-back

Opaskwayak Cree Nation

On March 27, 2026, at approximately 3:30 AM, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service received a report of a suspected impaired driver in the community. The vehicle was located and a traffic stop was conducted. An Approved Screening Device (ASD) was utilized which revealed the adult female driver, from Cross Lake, to be over the legal limit of alcohol in her blood.

The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside suspension as well as numerous tickets under the Provincial Offences Act. The vehicle was seized and impounded for 30 days.

Approximately 90 minutes later, Police were notified of another suspected impaired driver in the community. The vehicle was located and a traffic stop was conducted. An ASD was again utilized which revealed the adult female driver, from Opaskwayak Cree Nation, to be over the legal limit of alcohol in her blood.

The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside suspension as well as numerous tickets under the Provincial Offences Act. The vehicle was seized and impounded for 30 days.

Both drivers were in possession of Learner’s licences at the time of the offence.

Impaired driver assaults Police

Waywayseecappo

On April 12, 2026, at approximately 7:30 PM, officers from the Manitoba First Nations Police Waywayseecappo detachment were on pro-active patrol on Highway 45 where they observed a vehicle travelling at a high-rate of speed in the oncoming lane of traffic, directly towards the police unit. Officers were required to take evasive action to avoid a head-on collision.

A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle, and the driver appeared to be intoxicated by alcohol. He was arrested without issue.

Upon being transported to the office for processing, the adult male became aggressive and uncooperative. While handcuffed, he was able to head-butt an officer and uttered threats to kill. Throughout the remainder of his time in custody, he continued to be aggressive. The officer was injured but did not require medical attention.

Brenton LEDOUX, 29, of Waywayseecappo has been released on a Release Order to appear in Court with the following charges:

- Impaired operation of a motor vehicle

- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle

- Assault on a Police Officer

- Uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm

Firearms Search Warrant Executed in Sandy Bay First Nation After Dog Shooting

Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation

On April 1st, 2026, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service Crime Reduction and Enforcement Unit, assisted Sandy Bay MFNP members after receiving a report of a male driving around shooting dogs in the Townsite area of Sandy Bay. Police confirmed that one dog was critically injured. Following an investigation a search warrant was executed shortly after at a residence on Center Road in Sandy Bay First Nation where multiple firearms were seized.

Police are aware of a social media video concerning aggressive dogs; however, this does not justify individuals carrying or using firearms in highly populated areas where children and other community members may be present, particularly without proper licensing, authorization, and training.

The Manitoba First Nations Police Service remains committed to preserving public safety and addressing community concerns in a lawful and responsible manner. Community members who have concerns about aggressive dogs are encouraged to report them to the Sandy Bay First Nation Safety Officers (FNSOs) so the matter can be addressed safely and appropriately in accordance with band leadership.

One arrested after robbery at knifepoint

On March 22, 2026, at approximately 7:00 PM, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service received a report from a male victim indicating that he had just been held at knifepoint and robbed by two suspects, who were still on scene. Officers attended immediately and were directed by witnesses to a nearby business.

One of the suspects immediately fled on foot when advised he was under arrest. After a short foot chase, the male continued to resist arrest. An Energy Weapon (TASER) was deployed and successfully allowed the officers to take the male into custody. The second male had fled the scene prior to police arrival and has not been located. The victim was not injured.

Lionel BOURASSA, 41, of Grand Rapids has been remanded into custody with the following charges:

Assault
Uttering threats
Resist arrest

Additionally, BOURASSA had two warrants for arrest for the following charges:

Assault
Break and Enter
Utter Threats
Robbery

The second suspect has been identified, and police are in the process of obtaining a warrant for arrest.

Police locate firearms after conducting a search warrant.

Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation

On March 24, 2026, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) Crime Reduction & Enforcement Unit (CREU), with assistance from the RCMP Emergency Response Team, executed a firearms-related search warrant at a residence located in the Townsite area of Sandy Bay First Nation.

The investigation was initiated after officers were alerted to a social media post showing a handgun being pointed through a window in the direction of MFNPS officers who were parked in the driveway of the residence. The image depicted a pistol aimed toward police, raising immediate public- and officer-safety concerns.

As a result of the investigation and subsequent search warrant, one male was taken into custody without incident. Officers located evidence consistent with multiple firearms-related offences, including the possession of a homemade prohibited firearm.

Jonathon Thomas Richard (24), of Sandy Bay First Nation appeared in Portage la Prairie Provincial Court on March 25, 2026, facing the following charges:

• Pointing a Firearm

• Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm (x3)

• Possession of a Prohibited Firearm (homemade)

• Careless Storage of a Firearm (x3)

• Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose (x3)

• Possession of Prohibited Ammunition

Methamphetamine seized after search warrant

Members of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) Fisher River Cree Nation detachment, with assistance from the MFNPS Crime Reduction Enforcement Unit (CREU), executed a search warrant on a residence in Fisher River Cree Nation.

A search of the residence resulted in the seizure of over 600 grams of methamphetamine, Canadian currency and drug paraphernalia consistent with drug trafficking.

Police arrested Chelsea Traverse (37) of Fisher River Cree Nation who was remanded into custody on the following charges:

Possession for the purpose of trafficking – Methamphetamine
Possession of Proceeds of Crime
Fail to comply with an undertaking

Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN) Detachment

In late 2025, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service installed AXON Fleet 3 camera systems in all marked Police vehicles. This was done as part of a commitment and investment to keep First Nations communities safe.

These cameras serve a dual purpose by recording all vehicle stops and prisoner transports and are equipped with an Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) system. On March 1st, these cameras were activated in Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN) as part of a pilot test.

Opaskwayak Cree Nation:

On March 6, 2026 at approximately 1:00 AM, officers of the Opaskwayak Cree Nation detachment were on general patrol when the ALPR system alerted them of an unregistered vehicle. A traffic stop was conducted in the 400 block of Kiche Maskanow. Officers utilized an Approved Screening Device which resulted in the driver of the vehicle blowing a ‘FAIL’.

The driver of the vehicle, an adult female from Opaskwayak Cree Nation, was served an immediate roadside suspension. Her vehicle was impounded and her driver license was suspended for 3 months. Additionally, all occupants of the vehicle were served Provincial Offence Notices for a variety of offences.

MFNPS Launches Crime Reduction and Enforcement Unit Pilot Project

The Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) has launched its Crime Reduction and Enforcement Unit (CREU) Pilot Project, a new initiative designed to strengthen public safety across the 12 First Nation communities served by MFNPS.

The CREU is a specialized team focused on intelligence-led policing and targeted enforcement to address specific crime issues impacting communities, including illegal firearms, illicit drugs, and gang-related activity. The unit will also support harm-reduction initiatives and work closely with partner agencies to identify and respond to emerging threats.

The launch of the CREU pilot project builds on several initiatives MFNPS has announced over the past year aimed at strengthening community safety, modernizing policing services, and expanding collaborative partnerships.

Guided by the MFNPS 2023–2026 Strategic Plan, the unit will focus on disrupting the supply of illegal firearms and drugs, targeting organized criminal activity, and strengthening intelligence sharing with law enforcement partners.

“The safety and well-being of the communities we serve remains our top priority,” said Chief of Police Jason Colon. “The creation of the Crime Reduction and Enforcement Unit allows MFNPS to take a more proactive and intelligence-led approach to addressing firearms, drug trafficking, and gang activity that threaten our communities. This pilot project strengthens our ability to work alongside our partners while remaining grounded in the values and priorities of the First Nations we serve.”

The CREU will operate as a one-year pilot project, during which MFNPS will evaluate its effectiveness. If successful, the service plans to expand the program into a permanent unit with dedicated teams serving both eastern and western regions.

MFNPS remains committed to advancing policing strategies that reflect the culture, values, and priorities of First Nation communities, while working collaboratively to enhance safety and well-being across Manitoba.

Investigation on Illegal Sale of Cigarettes Leads to Charges

Long Plain First Nation: On March 5th, 2026, members of the Manitoba First Nations Police Crime Reduction and Enforcement Unit (CREU) with the assistance of members of the Long Plain Detachment executed a Search Warrant at a residence in the community of Long Plain First Nation for the suspected sale of tobacco.

As a result of the execution of the Search Warrant Police located over 81 cartons of cigarettes totally in an amount of 16,760 cigarettes, with an estimated street value of over $6,000.

As a result of the investigation:

A 76-year-old male of Long Plain First Nation has been charged with the following:

· Possession of Tobacco for the Purpose of Sale,

· Possession of Proceeds of Crime, and

· Possession of a Controlled Substance, namely Codeine.

He was released on an undertaking, in accordance with the Criminal Code of Canada.

Increased Police Activity in Long Plain First Nation

On March 5, 2026, members of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) Crime Reduction and Enforcement Unit (CREU), with assistance from officers of the Long Plain Detachment, executed several search warrants authorized by the Provincial Court.

Among these warrants were three targeting individuals who were wanted on outstanding arrest warrants and had been actively evading police.

As a result of these warrants:

Perry Nathan Whitford (31) of Long Plain First Nation was located and arrested with the following:

· Warrant of Arrest – Break and Enter

· Warrant of Arrest for:

o Theft Under $5,000

o Break and Enter

o Possession of Proceeds of Crime Over $5,000

· Warrant of Arrest – Break and Enter with Intent

· Warrant of Arrest for:

o Break and Enter

o Mischief Over $5,000

In addition to these warrants, Whitford was also banished from Long Plain First Nation by way of Band Council Resolution (BCR).

Whitford was held in custody following his arrest.

Original News Release

On February 27, 2026, at approximately 6:00 PM, Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers were advised of a suspicious person in a residential neighborhood near the Otineka Mall. Officers attended and found the adult male had been seriously assaulted and held against his will for several hours at a nearby residence.

Additional resources were deployed and a residence on Mikisew Street was contained. Four adults were taken into custody. A search warrant was conducted on the residence later in the day.

Police believe that the victim was intentionally and specifically targeted. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) transported the victim to the hospital where he was treated and later released.

Delaney BALLANTYNE (22) of Opaskwayak Cree Nation has been arrested and remanded into custody with the following charges:

- Aggravated assault

- Assault with a weapon

- Assault while choking / strangling

- Forcible Confinement

- Administering a noxious substance

Police locate guns and drugs after assisting Child & Family Services

Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation

On February 16, 2026, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) received a report of a suicidal person at a residence with firearms on Center Road in Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation.

Police attended the location and found that the call was unfounded. Because of the nature of the initial call, Sandy Bay Child & Family Services were also on scene when a firearm was observed. Police also saw drug paraphernalia that indicated potential drug trafficking. Police secured the residence and obtained a search warrant. Once the search warrant was executed, officers located and seized 4 grams of cocaine, 116 grams of methamphetamine along with items related to drug trafficking. One firearm was also located and seized.

Joseph William Desmarais (48) of Sandy Bay Ojibway Nation and arrested and charged with the following offences:

· Unsafe storage of a firearm X2

· Unauthorized possession of a firearm

· Possession of a firearm while unauthorized

· Possession of a prohibited weapon while unauthorized

· Possession of a weapon while prohibited

· Possession for the purposes of trafficking – Cocaine

· Possession for the purposes of trafficking – methamphetamine

· Unauthorized Possession of a restricted weapon

· Possession of a weapon dangerous to public

Desmarais was held in custody.

Search Warrant for Firearms Leads to Drug Charges

Roseau River Anishinaabe First Nation

On February 16th, 2026, members of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) Roseau River Detachment, with the assistance from the MFNPS Crime Reduction Enforcement Unit (CREU) and the RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) executed a search warrant on a residence based on information received indicating that there were unauthorized firearms being stored at the residence.

During the initial execution of the search warrant, 4 individuals were arrested without incident. At that time, officers did not locate unauthorized firearms, but they did observe drug paraphernalia in plain view. The scene was held while the MFNPS applied for a Controlled Drugs and Substances search warrant.

The second search warrant was authorized by the Provincial Court. As a result, approximately 32 grams of suspected methamphetamine with an estimated street value of 3,000 dollars along with scales, mobile devices and packaging materials were seized.

As a result of the investigation:

Sean Nelson of Roseau River First Nation has been charged with the following:

· Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine

· Fail to comply with Release Order Condition

A 40-year-old male of Roseau River First Nation has been charged with the following:

· Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Methamphetamine

A 39-year-old female of Roseau River First Nation has been charged with the following:

· Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Methamphetamine

Sean Nelson was remanded into custody and the 40-year-old male along with the 39-year-old were released on Undertakings in accordance with the Criminal Code of Canada.

Shooting Incident at Fisher River Detachment

On February 10, 2026, in the early morning hours, the Fisher River detachment of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNP) was the target of a drive-by shooting.

Unknown individuals approached the detachment on an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and fired numerous shots, striking the building exterior and police vehicles parked on site. Two MFNP officers were on duty inside the detachment at the time. Thankfully, no injuries were reported to officers or any community members.

This incident appears to have been specifically directed at the police detachment and does not indicate a broader threat to the Fisher River community or its residents.

MFNP is actively investigating this serious matter and is working to identify and apprehend the person(s) responsible. Our officers remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of Fisher River Cree Nation.

Fraud Investigation Leads to Drug Trafficking Charges

On February 7th, 2026, members of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) were dispatched to a report of a stolen credit card being used fraudulently at a local business.

Police promptly identified the female suspect involved and attended her residence, where she was placed under arrest without incident. During the arrest, officers observed drug paraphernalia in plain view, which resulted in the arrest of three additional adults.

Members secured the residence while a search warrant was sought and subsequently authorized by the Provincial Court. Execution of the search warrant resulted in the seizure of approximately 187 grams of suspected cocaine and 61 grams of suspected methamphetamine, with a combined estimated street value of $24,800.

As a result of the investigation:

A 50-year-old female of Roseau River First Nation has been charged with the following:

· Fraud Under $5000

· Possession of Property Obtained by Crime

· Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Methamphetamine

Police execute several search warrants for drugs

Roseau River First Nation, Manitoba

The Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) has arrested one male following an extensive investigation into drug trafficking activities impacting Roseau River First Nation and surrounding communities.

The investigation, which commenced in September 2025, was initiated based on tips received from the community in conjunction with a police investigation. Through diligent work, investigators established a person of interest with suspected direct involvement in supplying methamphetamine and cocaine to community members. He allegedly had frequent visits to known drug houses and connections to individuals actively selling drugs on his behalf. All information gathered was deemed reliable; corroborated by an ongoing police investigation.

On January 30, 2026, MFNPS officers executed search warrants at multiple locations, with tactical support provided by units from Altona Police, Winkler Police and the RCMP. The operation was conducted in a coordinated and safe manner to ensure public safety. Tactical units were appropriately assigned to higher-risk sites.

One male was arrested and released from custody to appear in court in Emerson, Manitoba, to face the following charges:

· Possession for the purpose of trafficking – methamphetamine.

· Possession for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine.

· Possession of proceeds of crime.

Other individuals interviewed in connection with the investigation were released without charges at this time. The investigation remains ongoing. Examination continues for evidence related to drug trafficking and conspiracy to traffic illicit drugs.

3 adults charged after female youth assaulted

On December 10, 2025, at approximately 6:15 PM Manitoba First Nations Police Service received a report of a female youth laying on the side of a road in the Big Eddy Settlement, with injuries. Officers and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) attended immediately and located the female. She was transported to the hospital with minor injuries and later released. Investigation revealed that she had been assaulted by a group of adults at a nearby residence and was sexually assaulted by one of the male suspects.

Additional resources were deployed including the Remote Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS). The residence was contained by officers while a search warrant was obtained. 10 adult suspects were taken into custody over several hours.

An adult female, age 26, from Opaskwayak Cree Nation, was released on an Undertaking as per the Criminal Code of Canada with a pending charge of Assault.

An adult male, age 28, from Opaskwayak Cree Nation, was remanded into custody with a new charge of Assault. He had an outstanding warrant for arrest.

8 other subjects were determined to not have been involved and were released later in the evening without charges.

An additional adult male, age 19, from Opaskwayak Cree Nation, was arrested later in the evening at a different residence. He has been remanded into custody with the following charges:

- Sexual assault with a weapon

- Forcible confinement

- Assault with a weapon

- Uttering threats

- Fail to comply with a Release Order x4

On December 7, 2025, Manitoba First Nations Police Service received a report of a male that had been assault at a residence in the Big Eddy Settlement. Police attended and learned that the victim had been assaulted by multiple suspects. During the assault, a firearm was brandished and pointed at the victim.

As the victim was fleeing, a gun shot was heard. The victim was uninjured.

The eivestigation led to an adult male being identified as the primary suspect. On December 10, police located the suspect at a residence in Opaskwayak Cree Nation and arrested him without incident.

Brayden Turner, 18, from Opaskwayak Cree Nation, has been remanded into custody and is charged with:

- Discharge firearm with intent

- Point firearm

Police are asking members of the public in the 200 block of McGillvary Boulevard to review home surveillance systems that may have been active during the early morning hours of December 7 ^th , 2025, and contact police if any suspicious activity is observed.

Pro Active Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Trafficking Charges

Long Plain First Nation

On November 22, 2025, just after midnight Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) officers were on pro active patrol in Long Plain First Nation. Police conducted a traffic stop after a vehicle was observed traveling at a high rate of speed.

During the traffic stop a female was identified as having a warrant for her arrest. While effecting the arrest on the female, open liquor was observed in the vehicle. All occupants were placed under arrest for unlawful transportation of liquor. As police removed the occupants from the vehicle the driver was noted to be impaired by drug.

A search of the vehicle and people in custody led to the location and seizure of suspected cocaine, Canadian Currency, drug trafficking paraphernalia and illegal cigarettes.

Cori Mauthe, 51, of Glenboro, was held in custody for court and has been charged with:

- Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking (Cocaine)

- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000

Mallory McKinney, 37, of Swan Lake First Nation, was held in custody for court. She had an outstanding warrant for her arrest and has also been charged with:

- Possession of a Controlled Substance (Cocaine)

Matthew McKinney, 39, of Swan Lake First Nation, was released from custody on an Undertaking for a future court date. He has been charged with:

- Operation while Impaired (Drug)

- Possession of a Controlled Substance (Cocaine)

- Possess fewer than 25 units of unmarked tobacco ($2542 fine)

2 additional occupants of the vehicle were released without charge.

Female charged in connection with Theft

Long Plain First Nation, Manitoba

On November 30, 2025, at approximately 10:00 am Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) officers received a report of a stolen moped.

Police spoke with the complainant and learned that they had followed the tracks of the moped to a residence on Edwin Road in Long Plain First Nation and identified the suspect in the theft. Members attended to the residence but were advised that the alleged suspect was not at there.

Later in the day MFNPS members received information that the suspect had been seen returning to the residence.

Members attended and confirmed that the suspect was inside, but she refused to exit the residence and advised members to get a warrant.

An entry warrant was obtained and executed with the assistance from MFNPS K-9 and RPAS units. The female was taken into custody without incident.

The moped was located and returned to the victim but had been damaged.

35-year-old Faye Prince was charged with the following offences:

- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime under $5000

- Theft Under $5000

- Mischief Under $5000

- Resist/Obstruct Peace Officer

Prince was held in custody to appear in Portage La Prairie Provincial Court on December 1, 2025.

Female charged in connection with Shooting

On December 3, 2025, shortly after 8:00 am Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) officers received a report of a male suffering from a gunshot wound at a residence on Lake Road North in Sandy Bay First Nation.

Officers immediately attended to the residence along with EMS. It was confirmed that the male had an injury consistent with a gun shot. He was transported to Health Sciences Centre in stable condition by STARS air ambulance.

It was determined that the shooting had taken place at a residence on Lake Road South. Members secured that residence and a search warrant was executed to locate any evidence related to the shooting.

Through investigation it was determined that the victim and suspect got into a physical altercation inside the residence. During the altercation, a homemade firearm was discharged, striking the victim.

On December 4, 2025, just after 3:00 pm MFNPS officers were updated that the Sandy Bay First Nation Safety Officers had located the suspect, 20-year-old Samora Richard.

She was arrested and charged with the following offences.

- Assault with a Weapon

- Discharge Firearm with Intent

- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

- Fail to Comply with Release Order

RICHARD was held in custody to appear in Portage La Prairie Provincial Court on December 5, 2025.

On Saturday, November 29, 2025, the MFNPS – Sandy Bay detachment became aware of an online threat to do harm towards Langruth Elementary School located in Langruth, Manitoba.

MFNPS immediately began investigating this incident and contacted the school administration.

On Saturday, November 29 ^th , a youth was arrested for Uttering Threats and was released on a court order for a future court date in Amaranth, MB.

MFNPS believe this incident to be an isolated incident.

On November 30, 2025, at approximately 2:45 AM Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers were on a pro-active patrol and conducted a traffic stop in The Pas to ensure sobriety and proper licencing. Further investigation led to all occupants of the vehicle being detained under the controlled drugs and substances act.

A search of the vehicle led to the seizure of over half a kilogram of suspected cocaine and a large quantity of suspected methamphetamine, with a combined street value of over $40,000.

Crystal Askan, 46, of Winnipeg, has been charged and remanded into custody with the following:

- Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine)

- Possession of a controlled substance – cocaine

- Possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine

Gerald Campbell, 41, of Moose Lake, has been charged and remanded into custody with the following:

Male arrested with home-made edged weapon

On November 15, 2025, at approximately 12:30 pm Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers were contacted by a local business advising that an intoxicated male was passed out inside of the establishment.

While police were on route, the business called back and stated that the male had a large machete and had now left on foot towards a school.

Officers immediately located the male in the area. When advised that he was under arrest, he fled on foot but was arrested after a short foot pursuit. Police located a home-made edged weapon concealed on his person.

The Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) in Brokenhead First Nation, conducted an ongoing investigation into drug trafficking within the community.

On November 19th, 2025, The Manitoba First Nation Police Service with the assistance of the RCMP Emergency Response Team, executed a search warrant at a home in Sturgeon Bay, Brokenhead First Nation.

As a result of information gathered during the investigation and the results from the search warrant of the residence, one adult male has been arrested and charged with the following.

Terrence Neil Prince, 45, is charged with:

· Possession for the purpose of trafficking – namely, Cocaine

· Possession for the purpose of trafficking x2 – namely, Opioids

· Possession of a controlled substance – namely, Methamphetamine

· Possession of a firearm when knowing possession is unauthorized x4

· Unsafe storage of firearms x3

· Possession of property obtained by crime less than or equal to $5000

Request to identify – Robbery Suspects

On October 12, 2025, at approximately 5:40 PM, members of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service responded to a Robbery at a business in Opaskwayak Cree Nation. The suspects, armed with bear mace, had entered the lounge and sprayed the bear mace towards staff before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money from the VLT lounge. The suspects fled on foot prior to police arrival.

The suspects are described as adult indigenous males, approximately 20 years old, wearing all black and wearing red bandanas around their face.

CCTV footage was reviewed, and the investigation is ongoing. Police are seeking the public's assistance in identifying the suspects involved in this incident.

ATV Stolen at Gunpoint

On October 30, 2025, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service in Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation received reports of an injured male and that an ATV that had been stolen at gunpoint on Centre Road in Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation.

Police responded to the complaint and found that 2 males had initially assaulted a male. A female passerby had tried to offer assistance to the victim but was confronted by one of the men who threatened her with a firearm. Her ATV was then stolen.

On November 3, 2025, with the assistance of the Manitoba RCMP, the second subject, Damrey Desmarias (21) of Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation was arrested and charged with the following offences:

- Uttering threats

On October 28, 2025, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service in Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation received a report from EMS of a male who was shot in the arm on Lake Road South in Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation.

Police attended the location and found that an adult male was approached by three males on ATVs while walking on the road. A verbal argument occurred between the victim and one of the males, resulting in the victim being slashed with a knife and shot in the arm. EMS transported the victim to the Portage Hospital.

On October 29, 2025, Police located Tommy Desmarais (23) of Sandy Bay Ojibway Nation and arrested and charged him with the following offence:

- Discharge a Firearm with the intent to endanger life

On November 3, 2025, with the assistance of the Manitoba RCMP, the second subject, Damrey Desmarias (21) of Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation was arrested and charged with the following offences:

- Discharge a Firearm with the intent to endanger life

On September 29, 2025, at approximately 5:20 AM Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers in Opaskwayak Cree Nation conducted a traffic stop in The Pas to ensure sobriety and proper licencing. Further investigation revealed that the driver was providing a false identity. The driver and passenger of the vehicle were detained.

With the assistance of MFNP K9 Nyx, a large quantity of suspected cocaine was located and seized. The driver and passenger were arrested for possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. The driver continued to provide a false name and other information.

Upon identification, the male was found to have several warrants of arrest from Ontario.

Agrim Bajpai (21) of Niagara Falls, Ontario, has been remanded into custody with the following charges:

- Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine)

- Obstruct Police

- Identity Fraud

An adult female (34) from Pukatawagan was released on an Undertaking as per the Criminal Code of Canada to appear in Court at a later date with the following charge:

It was an honour to see Sergeant Lauren Melnyk receive The Minister of Justice and Attorney General Excellence in Law Enforcement Award / Medal. On September 28, 2025, Manitoba First Nations Police and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to an ATV rollover in the Big Eddy Settlement. Two children, aged 7 and 8, sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure. Both youths were not wearing helmets or any other safety gear.

On October 15, 2025, at approximately 2:00 AM Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers in Opaskwayak Cree Nation attempted a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle. The vehicle fled at a high rate of speed into The Pas and eventually became stuck in snow. Along with the assistance of The Pas RCMP, 7 adult occupants were taken into custody.

On September 20 ^th , 2025, the Manitoba First Nations Police were conducting proactive patrols and located an intoxicated male outside of a business on Opaskwayak Cree Nation. The male provided a name to police which was determined to be false. Further investigation led officers to determine the identity of the male and learned that he had been wanted for over 4 years on a Canada-wide warrant for arrest for parole violations.

Cody CHARTRAND (33) of Opaskwayak Cree Nation was arrested on the strength of his warrant and is facing the following new charges:

- Identity Fraud

- Obstruct Police

He has been remanded into custody to appear in Court at a later date.

On September 25, 2025, at approximately 4:15 AM Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers in Opaskwayak Cree Nation conducted a traffic stop to ensure sobriety and proper licencing. Further investigation led to all occupants of the vehicle being arrested for possession of a controlled substance.

A search of the vehicle revealed suspected cocaine, crack cocaine, hydromorphine, and other drug trafficking related items.

An adult female (23) from The Pas was released on an Undertaking as per the Criminal Code of Canada to appear in Court at a later date with the following charges:

- Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine)

- Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (opioid)

- Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (other)

The passengers of the vehicle were released from custody without charges.

On September 10, 2025 the Manitoba First Nations Police Service in Opaskwayak Cree Nation received a report of a person being chased by two males on bikes. The repot further indicated that the males on bikes had a firearm. While on route, police learned that the firearm had been discharged towards at the fleeing person. The MFNP K-9 Unit and Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) attended the area. One suspect was located and arrested without further incident. The victim was located uninjured.

As the investigation continued, a search warrant was submitted and approved for a residence in Opaskwayak Cree Nation. As a result, a prohibited firearm was located and seized.

On September 11, MFNP members were on pro-active patrol and located the second suspect near the business district of Opaskwayak Cree Nation. He was arrested without incident.

On September 9, after following up with tips from local businesses and community members, officers conducted a traffic stop near Clearwater Lake and located both youths in the vehicle.

Both teens were reunited with their family members and returned to Saskatchewan.

Pro-active traffic stop leads to drug trafficking charges

Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN)

On September 14, 2025, at approximately 2:00 AM Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers in Opaskwayak Cree Nation conducted a traffic stop to ensure sobriety and proper licencing. Officers discovered the driver was breaching his court-imposed conditions. As a result, he was arrested.

Further investigation led to the driver and passenger being arrested for drug-related offences.

A search of the vehicle revealed a large quantity of suspected cocaine, Canadian currency, and other drug trafficking related items.

David ONWUSOROM (29) of Rathwell, was held in custody with the following charges:

- Possession of a controlled substance (cocaine) for the purpose of trafficking

- Possession of proceeds of crime under $5000

- Fail to comply with release order

- Other Provincial offences

An adult male (40) from The Pas, was released on an Undertaking as per the Criminal Code of Canada and to appear in Court at a later date with the following charges:

- Possession of a controlled substance (cocaine) for the purpose of trafficking

Police Investigate Firearm Incident

Long Plain First Nation, Manitoba

On September 3, 2025, at approximately 3:48 pm, Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) received a report alleging that two individuals shot the front window of a residence on the Long Plain First Nation with a shotgun.

Officers immediately attended to the home and spoke to 2 occupants, who reported that an adult male and a youth male attended the residence, there was a short interaction with the occupants, resulting in the adult male brandishing a sawed-off shotgun and pointing it at the front door of the residence. No shots were fired, but upon leaving, the suspects smashed the front window.

With the assistance of MFNPS K9, members determined that the adult male had fled to a residence on Split Rock Trail on the Long Plain First Nation. As Police attended the residence, the adult male fled out of the rear and was taken into custody. Shortly after, another male, who was not involved in the first incident also fled out of the rear and was taken into custody. This male was found to be armed with a sawed of .22 caliber rifle and had ammunition for the firearm. Police searched the residence and located a loaded sawed-off shotgun.

As a result of this investigation the following charges have been laid on the following males,

25-year-old Preston PERSWAIN has been charged with the following offences:

- Weapons possession contrary to an order x 4

- Fail to Comply with Release Order x 3

- Careless Use of a Firearm

- Pointing a Firearm x 2

- Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose

- Unauthorizwed Possession of a Prohibited Weapon x 2

- Possession of a Firearm Knowing Possession is Unauthorized x2

- Possession of a Restricted Firearm with ammo without licence x 2

PERSWAIN was held in custody to appear in court at a later date.

24-year-old Nathan SCOTT has been charged with the following offences:

- Possess of Firearm with Tampered Serial Number

- Weapons Possession Contrary to an Order x 2

- Discharge Firearm While Being Reckless

- Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose

- Carrying Concealed Weapon

- Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited Weapon

- Possession of a Firearm Knowing Possession is Unauthorized

- Possession of a Restricted Firearm with Ammo Without Licence

SCOTT was held in custody to appear in court at a later date.

The youth male has not been located by Police.

Stolen Truck and Homemade Firearm Located

Sandy Bay First Nation

On August 22, 2025, shortly before 10:30 am Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers received a report of a truck stuck in the ditch on Lagoon Road in Sandy Bay First Nation.

MFNPS officers responded to the area and located a white Dodge Ram truck stuck in the ditch with an unknown male near the vehicle. The male began walking away upon police arrival. He was instructed to stop which he complied with and dropped his backpack.

As officers approached the male a homemade firearm was observed next to the male’s backpack. The male was taken into custody and searched. During the search, ammunition and additional gun parts were located. The truck located in the ditch was determined to have been stolen from the RM of North Norfolk 2 days prior.

31-year-old Edmond Raymond Spence was charged with the following offences:

- Unauthorized possession of a firearm (x2)
- Carrying a concealed weapon (x2)
- Possession of a firearm knowing possession is unauthorized
- Weapons possession contrary to an order (x3)
- Possession of property obtained by crime

Spence was held into custody to appear in court at a later date.

Charges laid after police locate Stolen UTV

Sandy Bay First Nation

On August 23, 2025, just after 11:00 a.m. Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers were advised of a potentially stolen UTV on rural roads heading towards Sandy Bay First Nation.

Officers immediately attended to the area and located the 6x6 UTV stopped on road 51W in the RM of Westlake-Gladstone. A lone male occupant was taken into custody. While searching the male, police located numerous pieces of identification that did not belong to him. The UTV was reported stolen from Portage la Prairie later in the day.

33-year-old Adrian Jordan ROULETTE was charged with:

- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime less than $5000

- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5000

Roulette was held in custody for court appearance at a later date.

2 People charged in connection with Firearms Call

Sandy Bay First Nation

On August 22, 2025, shortly before 3:00 pm Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers received a report of a male outside a residence in Sandy Bay First Nation armed with a sawed-off shotgun. The male then fled the area in an orange UTV.

MFNPS Officers immediately attended to the area observed the orange UTV driving in a field. Officers entered the field and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the UTV continued to flee. Officers continued to follow the UTV and it eventually became stuck trying to enter a bush area. Members immediately took 2 people into custody, but 2 additional suspects fled on foot. A third suspect was arrested in the bush a short time later.

Witnesses reported that the 4th suspect had entered a shed in a nearby yard, still armed with a firearm.

MFNPS officers with the assistance of Manitoba RCMP Emergency Response Team gained entry to the shed. The male suspect was not located, but numerous firearms were.

The 4th suspect, the male that was reported to be in possession of the firearm was located later in the evening and arrested without incident.

34-year-old Lindsey Daniel HOULE has been charged with the following offences:

- Unauthorizwed Possession of a Firearm
- Unsafe storage of firearms
- Possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle
- Possession of a firearm with a tampered serial number
- Weapons possession contrary to an order
- Possession of property obtained by crime

HOULE was held in custody to appear in court at a later date.

A 48-year-old male was also charged in this incident and released on an Undertaking to appear in court at a later date. 2 of the suspects were released without charge.

Chief Colon has served as Interim Chief since January 2025, after the sudden passing of late Chief of Police Doug Palson , providing stability and leadership during a period of transition. Assault with a Weapon Leads to a Search of Firearm and Weapons Charges

On July 1, 2025, Manitoba First Nation Police Service (MFNPS) responded to a report of a male wielding a machete in a residence in the community of Waywayseecappo First Nation.

Police responded to the residence and subjects were identified and arrested. Police learned that a female was in possession of a firearm with a child in the residence.Police were able to arrest the female without incident, and the child was taken to a place of safety.

Upon further investigation, and with the assistance of MFNP Criminal Investigation Unit, Police were able to obtain a search warrant for the r esidence in Waywayseecappo First Nation that resulted in the seizure of a Firearm and multiple weapons.

Lawrence Whitstone (45 years old) of Waywayseecappo First Nation, has been charged with the following:

· Fail to comply with release order.

· Possession of a weapon contrary to court order and failure to surrender authorization (x4)

· Unsafe storage of firearms

· Unauthorized possession of firearm

· Possession of a weapon obtained through criminal activity.

Anthony Whitstone (24 years old) of Waywayseecappo First Nation, has been charged with the following:

· Assault with a weapon.

· Uttering threats (x2)

Police Assaulted While Investigating a Youth Party

On August 2, 2025, Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNPS) responded to a report of an adult male providing youth with alcohol at a party at his residence in Roseau River First Nation.

Police attended the residence to follow up with the complaint and were met by a crowd of people causing a huge disturbance, Police attempted to speak to the male homeowner, the male produced a knife and advanced towards Police, after being told numerous times to drop the knife and not complying, Police deployed a CEW on the male who was then taken into custody.

One adult male was arrested for assault and later released on court-imposed conditions for a later court date.

Roseau River First Nation, Manitoba

On August 1, 2025, Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNPS) responded to a report of a male threatening to shoot at a residence in Roseau Rapids area of Roseau River First Nation.

While Police were responding to the area another call was reported of gun shots in the area from a moving vehicle, MFNPS members, assisted by outside Police agencies, contained the area after locating the suspect vehicle at a local residence. Police contacted the occupants who surrendered peacefully to Police. A machete, replica firearm and crossbow were seized after a search of the residence and vehicle. A further investigation could not confirm that a firearm was discharged.

One adult male was arrested for assault and was later released on court-imposed conditions for a later court date.

Acting on tips from the community members of Sandy Bay First Nation, the MFNPS was able to locate and arrest Byron Alvin Soloman ROULETTE for his outstanding warrants.

Original News Release:

Sandy Bay First Nation, Manitoba: On July 24, 2025, Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNP) responded to a report of a break and enter involving a firearm on Center Road in Sandy Bay First Nation.

Police responded and found that a male adult was assaulted by two males who then stole a truck from the residence, one of the males was in possession of a firearm. One male was located and arrested while police were dealing with another incident. The male was suffering from self-inflicted wounds and was transported to the Portage Hospital.

Byron Alvin Soloman ROULETTE – 26 years old from Sandy Bay has been charged with the following offences and is currently wanted by Police.

· Assault causing bodily harm

· Uttering threats

· Robbery with a firearm

· Theft of a motor vehicle

· Use of a firearm in the commission of an offence

· Pointing a firearm X2

· Possession of a firearm while prohibited

· Fail to comply with a release order

· Break and Enter

· Escape lawful custody

While the ROULETTE was waiting for treatment at the Portage Hospital, he was able to flee while handcuffed from Police and exited the hospital. Numerous resources including MFNP RPAS operators and K-9 were deployed to the area.

Police Investigate Aggravated Assault in Sandy Bay First Nation

On July 31, 2025, just after 6:00 pm Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers received a report of a male suffering from stab wounds at a residence. Members attended and located a 38-year-old male with multiple stab wounds.

Officers immediately began providing life saving measures to the male. EMS and STARS air ambulance attended, and the male was transported to Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre. His condition has been upgraded to stable.

Police continue to investigate and are requesting the public’s assistance in identifying suspects in this incident.

Police Investigate Stabbing in Sandy Bay First Nation

On August 4, 2025, just after 7:00 pm Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers received a call that someone had been stabbed. Members responded to a residence and located a 28-year-old male suffering from stab wounds.

Officers provided first aid to the man. EMS and STARS air ambulance attended, and the male was transported to Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre. His condition has been upgraded to stable.

Through investigation it was determined that the victim and another male had been in what started as a consensual fight. It is alleged that at one point in the fight the accused male used and edged weapon and stabbed the victim multiple times.

The accused was located at the scene and taken into custody.

Gary Joseph McIvor (26) has been charged with:

- Aggravated Assault.

McIvor was held in custody to appear in Portage La Prairie court on August 5, 2025.

Police Seek Suspects After Machete Attack

On July 31, 2025, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) in Opaskwayak Cree Nation responded to a report of a male who had been assaulted with a machete in Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN).

Police attended to the area of 200 Kiche Maskanow and learned that a group of males were reported to have assaulted the victim with an edged weapon. A 56-year-old victim was transported to hospital and treated for nonlife threating injuries.

Police are actively trying to locate the suspects involved in this incident and are asking for the public’s assistance. Police are seeking assistance in reviewing home security footage around the Kikiwak and the 200 block of Kiche Maskanow between 1:00 am and 2:00 am on July 31st, 2025.

Wanted – William Alexander BUCK (Age 36)

OCN Detachment

On July 20th, 2024, the Manitoba First Nations Police were conducting pro-active traffic enforcement in the community of Opaskwayak Cree Nation. While attempting a traffic stop, a vehicle fled at a high rate of speed. Due to concerns for the safety of community members, police did not pursue the vehicle.

A short time later, police located the vehicle abandoned in the Abraham subdivision. Police Service Dog (PSD) Ceto was deployed in the area. A successful track led to the location and arrest of William Alexander Buck. He was charged with the following offences:

· Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle

· Flight from Peace Officer

· Resist / Obstruct Police Officer

· Drive while disqualified (Highway Traffic Act)

Buck was later released on several conditions along with a scheduled Court appearance in October 2024. Buck failed to appear in Court and a warrant for his arrest was issued.

To this date, attempts to locate William Buck have been unsuccessful.

Youth Injured by Machete at Local Fair

On May 24, 2025, Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNP) were called to a report that a youth had been attacked with a machete at the Gordon Lathlin Memorial Center Parking Lot where an amusement park had been set up in Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN).

Police responded and found that a male youth had a cut to his head. Officers seized a weapon at the scene that was identified as being used in the attack. The youth was transported to The Pas hospital in stable condition for further treatment.

On May 2, 2025, Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) responded to a report of an assault on two youths in the community of Swan Lake.

Police quickly responded to the area and a suspect was identified, Police located the suspect in the area and was placed under arrest for the assaults. During the arrest the subject was found to be in possession of suspected cocaine. Upon further investigation, and with the assistance of MFNP Criminal Investigation Unit, Police were able to obtain a search warrant for a residence in Swan Lake First Nation that resulted in seizure of weapons, cocaine and illicit cannabis.

Cody Alex MARTIN (27) of Swan Lake First Nation, has been charged with the following:

• Possess Weapon Contrary to Order x4

• Assault x2

• Possession of Prohibited Device x3

• Possession of Illicit Cannabis

• Possess More than 5g of Dried Cannabis

• Possession of Cocaine for the Purpose of Trafficking

• Possess Cannabis not Labeled and Stamped in Accordance with Federal Requirements

Nancy Martin, 56 years old, of Swan Lake First Nation, has also been charged with the following:

• Possession of prohibited weapon X3

• Possession of illicit Cannabis X2

The potential for wildfires continue to pose a threat to public safety in First Nation Communities here in Manitoba.

The Manitoba First Nations Police Service would like to remind the public to check their local communities regarding fire and burning bans which may be in effect. The failure to follow these bans can result in catastrophic damage to homes and pose serious threats to the lives of community members.

We would like you to be aware of some of the provincial offences and fines which are in place as deterrent to disobeying fire bans:

First Nation community drug issues leads to search warrant in Baldur, Manitoba

Swan Lake First Nation

In 2024, Swan Lake First Nation community members voiced concerns of the drug activity in their community to the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS). MFNPS members from the Swan Lake detachment along with the MFNPS Criminal Investigation Unit (CIU) initiated a drug investigation to address these concerns.

The MFNPS was assisted on this investigation by the RCMP – Manitoba Integrated Law Enforcement Team (MILET).

On April 17, 2025, members of the MFNPS Swan Lake detachment, CIU and K9 unit, and the RCMP – MILET , executed a Controlled Drugs and Substance Act search warrant in the 100 block of Oak Creek Lane, Baldur, Manitoba. Eight individuals were taken into custody.

Officers located and seized:

· 40.43 grams of Cocaine.

· 172.24 grams of Cannabis.

· $2465 currency.

· Brass Knuckles.

· Unstamped tobacco

Two females from Baldur, Manitoba were arrested and charged.

A 53 year-old was arrested and charged with:

· Possess for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine x 2.

· Unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon.

· Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000

· Possession of Illicit cannabis.

· Possession of cannabis for the purpose of selling.

· Distribute more than 30 grams of dried cannabis.

· Possess fewer than 25 units of unmarked tobacco (Tobacco Tax Act)

· Unauthorized sale of cannabis (Liquor and Gaming Control Act)

She was released on an Undertaking to attend court on June 10, 2025 in Morden Provincial Court House.

Rochelle Bardarson, 33 years-old from Baldur, Manitoba was arrested and charged with Possess Proceeds of Crime under $5000 and on an outstanding warrant for failing to attend court as required. Bardarson was remanded into custody.

Six other individuals were released without any charges.

Male Wanted by Police Following Traffic Stop

Swan Lake First Nation

On April 3, 2025, Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the community of Swan Lake First Nation.

A male occupant, known to police to have multiple warrants for arrest, was found to be hiding in the vehicle. When told that he was under arrest, the male fled on foot from the vehicle. Additional police resources attended the area, including the Police Dog Services, however the suspect was not located.

A warrant for arrest has been issued for Terry Ray Martin (37) for the following charges:
− Resist arrest
− Being unlawfully at large
− Possession of a controlled substance – cocaine
− Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine

In addition to the new charges, Terry Martin is wanted on two warrants for arrest stemming from investigations from both RCMP and MFNP.

Multiple Arrests After Firearm Pointed at Female

Opakapaka Cree Nation

On April 8, 2025, at approximately 7:45 PM, Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) in Opaskwayak Cree Nation received a report of a disagreement between two parties at a local business. Three suspects in a vehicle approached two victims in a parking lot where an argument ensued. A male occupant of the vehicle then produced a firearm and pointed it at the victims. All suspects then fled the area in the vehicle.

Officers immediately attended and patrolled for the vehicle. OCN First Nations Safety Officers located the vehicle travelling northbound on Highway #10, at a high rate of speed. Moose Lake RCMP and Police Dog Services were advised and attended to the area. Police located the vehicle and all three suspects at a residence near Clearwater Provincial Park.

Further investigation led to the seizure of a sawed-off shotgun and ammunition.

Aaron Lambert (25) of Moose Lake has been held in custody and charged with the following:

− Point firearm
− Unauthorized possession of a firearm
− Use of a firearm in the commission of an offence
− Uttering threats against a person
− Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose − Possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition

Marcel Mercedi (33) of Moose Lake has been held in custody and charged with the following:

− Point firearm
− Possession of firearm contrary to an order
− Assault
− Fail to comply with release order conditions x3 − Unsafe storage of a firearm
− Possession of a weapon for a dangerous
- Possession of a weapon knowing unauthorized
− Use of a firearm in the commission of an offence
− Possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition

Reanne Buck (20) of Moose Lake has been held in custody and charged with the following:

− Point firearm
− Unauthorized possession of a firearm
− Use of a firearm in the commission of an offence
− Uttering threats against a person
− Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
− Possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition

Weapons charges pursued after driver attempts to flee Police.

Sandy Bay First Nation, Manitoba

On April 6, 2025, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) received a request from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to be on the lookout for 2 stolen trucks that were possibly heading to the Sandy Bay community.

Police observed the suspect vehicles described as a white Ford Truck and a Dodge truck on Hwy 50 near the community of Langruth, and attempted to stop the vehicles. The Dodge truck turned onto a gravel road, and the Police stayed with the white truck, soon after the Dodge returned to the highway from behind the Police unit and both vehicles tried to “box” in the patrol unit and force it off the road. While waiting for backup units the Dodge truck again left the highway. Police continued pursuing the white Ford Truck when backup units arrived; however, the vehicle continued and sped off when the emergency lights were activated. The vehicle continued to travel on Highway 50 northbound, once the vehicle reached the entrance to Sandy Bay community it came to a stop. A lone driver exited the vehicle and was arrested without incident. The second vehicle described as a Dodge Ram fled the area.

Officers searched the vehicle and located 4 firearms with numerous ammunitions. MFNP also learned that the vehicle was involved in numerous property and off-road vehicle thefts in surrounding communities.

Police have laid the following charges on a 17-year-old youth.

Unauthorized Possession of a firearm X4
Flight from a peace officer
Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle

The youth was released with numerous conditions by the courts.

Proactive traffic stops lead to the removal of Impaired drivers and drug charges

Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Manitoba

I n 24 hours beginning March 21, 2025, Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNP) were on proactive patrols stopping vehicles that led to Impaired driving and possession of cocaine charges in Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

On March 21, 2025, MFNP stopped a vehicle in the 800 block of Kiche Maskanow. The driver showed signs of impairment resulting in a breath sample demand, the driver failed a roadside screening test. A search of the vehicle was conducted and several baggies of a substance believed to be cocaine, along with the baggies drug trafficking paraphernalia was also located.

The 26-year-old male driver from The Pas, was charged with the following:

Possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine
Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000
Unlawful transportation of liquor in a motor vehicle
Fail to produce divers licence
Unlawful transportation of cannabis in a motor vehicle
30 day driving prohibition/licence suspension and his vehicle was impounded

He was released with conditions as required by the Criminal Code of Canada for a later court date.

The 25-year-old female passenger from Opaskwayak Cree Nation was charged with the following:

Possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine
Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000

She was released with conditions as required by the Criminal Code of Canada for a later court date.

Later that night members stopped another vehicle in the 400 block of Kiche Maskanow. The driver did hold a valid driver’s licence and was showing signs of impairment. The driver told Police "I was driving because I was the most soberest" The driver submitted to a breath sample to which he failed.

The 18-Year-old male driver from Opaskwayak Cree Nation was charged accordingly.

On March 22, 2025, just after midnight, MFNP members with the assistance with OCN First Nations Safety Officers stopped a vehicle in the Otineka Mall parking lot. Police observed open alcohol containers in the vehicle and the driver was showing signs of impairment. The driver submitted to a breath demand and failed.

The 34-year-old male driver from Opaskwayak Cree Nation was charged accordingly.

Police Investigate Serious Assault

Long Plain First Nation, Manitoba

On March 23, 2005, Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) received a complaint of an assault that took place over several days at a residence on Yellowquil Trail west in Long Plain First Nation.

The investigation revealed that over a course of several days an adult female and a youth female were held against their will and assaulted. As a result, Police arrested one male and executed a search warrant at a residence on Yellowquil Trail. Police seized approximately 9 grams of suspected meth, cash and numerous imitation firearms.

The 37-year-old male from Long Plain First Nation has been charged and held in custody on the following charges:

· Pointing a firearm

· Assault with a weapon

· Assault

· Discharge air gun or air pistol with intent to wound

· Forcible Confinement

· Uttering threats against a person

· Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose x2

· Weapons possession contrary to order x2

· Possession of property obtained by crime less than or equal to $5000

· Possession for the purpose of Trafficking – namely, Methamphetamine

This incident was an Intimate Partner Violence incident, the accused will not be named to protect the identity of the victim.

On February 6, 2025, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) received a complaint of potential financial irregularities within the administration of Birdtail Sioux First Nation.

The Manitoba First Nations Police Service Criminal Investigation Unit is currently investigating the complaint with the assistance from the RCMP Cyber and Financial Crimes Sections. These types of investigations are complex in nature and require a great deal of time and resources to complete. The investigation is in the early stages and no determination of responsibility has been determined at this point.

911 Call Leads to Card Game

On March 14, 2025, Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNP) received a report of a 911 caller on the line asking for Police to come to a residence in Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

Police were advised that the elderly caller requested Police attend for a game of cards, no other information was provided. For public safety reasons members attended the residence to check on the safety of the caller, it was determined that there was no emergency.

Police did stay and play a game of cards before continuing their community patrols.

Police Lay Weapons Charges After Traffic Stop

Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Manitoba

On March 14, 2025, Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNP) were received a call of an intoxicated male in the Otineka Mall carrying an edged weapon in Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

Police attended immediately and were advised by mall security that the male had left the building and was still armed with the weapon, Police located the male attempting to fight an unrelated female in the area. The male was given verbal command to comply with Police however he fled the area and threw the weapon into a snowbank. The male was pursued and arrested; he was not cooperative with Police.

The 38-year-old male and was charged with the following offences.

Possession a weapon for a dangerous purpose x 2
Carrying a concealed weapon x 2
Resist arrest
Causing a disturbance

The male was held to recover from his intoxicated state and later release on an undertaking to appear in court as required by the Criminal Code of Canada.

Police Execute Search Warrant

Waywayseecappo First Nation, Manitoba

On March 14, 2025, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) executed a search warrant on Shingoose Road in Waywayseecappo First Nation in connection with a drug investigation.

MFNPS detachment officers, with the assistance of the MFNPS Criminal Investigations Unit and MFNPS K9, executed a search warrant at a local residence resulting in a seizure of approximately 108 grams of suspected cocaine. Other items related to drug trafficking were also seized in the residence.

Police have laid the following charges because of this investigation.

Darrell Leo BRANDON, 65-year-old of Waywayseecappo First Nation

· Possession for the purpose of trafficking

Tyler Dean BRANDON 29-year-old of Waywayseecappo First Nation

· Possession for the purpose of trafficking

Both have been remanded into custody.

Police Lay Weapons Charges After Traffic Stop

On March 14, 2025, Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNP) were on proactive patrols when a previously reported stolen vehicle
was observed by Police and stopped in Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

Police recognized the female driver as a prohibited driver. The vehicle was stopped, and the driver was observed jumping into the back seat to evade Police. The driver was arrested for Driving While Prohibited. A male passenger was found to be breaching a court order and was also arrested. Police searched both the vehicle and occupants and located a bear spray concealed in a backpack.

Dakota MCGILLIVRAY (26) Of Opaskwayak Cree Nation was charged with the following:

Operation while prohibited
Obstruct peace officer
Unlawful transportation of liquor in a motor vehicle

MCGILLIVARY was remanded into custody.

Cruz Gordon CONSTANT (25) Of Opaskwayak Cree Nation was charged with the following:

Carry a concealed weapon
Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
Fail to comply with release order x 2
Unlawful transportation of liquor in a motor vehicle

CONSTANT was remanded into custody.

A 28-Year-old male from Opaskwayak Cree Nation was also arrested and charged with the following:

Carry a concealed weapon
Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose
Unlawful transportation of liquor in a motor vehicle

He was released on conditions to attend court at a later date.

Police Lay Charges after an Armed and Barricaded Situation

On February 28, 2025, Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNP) received a report of a female being assaulted by her partner on Amisk Crescent in Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

Police were advised that the male assaulting the female was in possession of a firearm, members attended immediately contained the area before contacting the occupants for safety. While containing the area, a male exited the residence and surrendered to Police without incident. The female victim was located safely and escorted by Police away from the residence.

The scene was held by Police and a search warrant was obtained and executed on the residence.

Kavika CONSTANT, 23 years-old, of Opaskwayak Cree Nation was arrested and charged with the following offences: CONSTANT was held in custody.

- Weapons Possession contrary to order and fail to surrender authorization X2

- Disobey order of court x4

- Uttering threats x2

- Forcible confinement

- Fail to Comply with Probation order x6

- Imitation firearm in commission of an offence x2

- Possess weapon dangerous purpose x2

- Assault

- Resist arrest

CONSTANT was also arrested on an outstanding warrant of arrest for:

- Break and enter a residence

- Uttering threats

- Assault with a weapon

- Assault

Update to Home Invasion Investigation

3rd Arrest In Connection With Home Invasion

A third person has been arrested in connection with the February 13, 2025, home invasions which occurred in Birdtail Sioux First Nation.

The Brandon Police Service (BPS) were able to locate and arrest 32-year-old Faith Bunn, who was wanted in connection with the February 13 ^th incident. Bunn is charged with one count of Assault Causing Bodily Harm.

Bunn was released by way of Undertaking to appear in Virden court at a later date. The Manitoba First Nations Police Service would like to thank the BPS for their assistance.

The investigation by the MFNPS continues into the two separate home invasions which resulted in assaults of 3 male victims. We are requesting that anyone with information regarding these serious assaults come forward to police.

February 19, 2025 Brandon Police Service Media Release:

On February 19 ^th at approximately 2:56PM Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) requested Brandon Police Service (BPS) assistance in locating and arresting a 32-year-old female in relation to a MFNPS investigation that occurred on the Birdtail Sioux First Nation. Brandon Police located the female in the 1100 block of 19 ^th Street where she was arrested on the strength of an endorsed Warrant of Arrest. She was then transported to BPS where she was interviewed and released by way of Undertaking by the MFNPS Police members.

Home Invasions Leads to Charges

Birdtail Sioux First Nation, MB

On February 13, 2025, Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) received a complaint regarding two separate home invasion incidents that had just occurred.

In both incidents, it is alleged that a group of individuals committed violent home invasions on two separate residences, resulting in assaults causing bodily harm to three different men.

Christopher Wasteste (34) was arrested on scene and faces the following charges:

- Assault Causing Bodily Harm x 3

- Break and Enter with Intent x 2

Eric Chalmers (23) was arrested at a later time and faces the following charges:

- Assault Causing Bodily Harm

- Break and Enter with Intent

Wasteste was remanded into custody to appear in Brandon Provincial Court.

Chalmers was taken before a Justice and released on conditions.

A warrant has been issued for another individual involved in the attacks; MFNPS is actively searching for them.

MFNPS is seeking assistance from the public to identify all the individuals involved in these incidents. Community safety is a top priority for MFNPS, and they are working closely with Chief and council to take swift and effective measures to address the situation.

Winnipeg Police Arrest Robbery Suspects

Update to our February 14th media release regarding an armed robbery in Swan Lake. The Winnipeg Police Service has made arrests. Great cooperation between our law enforcement partners!

The following is a Winnipeg Police Service media release from February 17, 2025.

Commercial Robbery – Arrests: C25-32616

Released: February 17, 2025 at 12:06 p.m.

On February 13, 2025 at approximately 11:20 p.m., Winnipeg Police Service North District General Patrol officers assisted by members of the Tactical Support Team, K-9, and Air 1, responded to the 500 block of Selkirk Avenue for the report of a commercial robbery that had just occurred.

Members learned that a group of masked male suspects armed with a variety of weapons attempted to rob the store. The suspects had fled prior to police arrival.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and learned that these suspects were linked to several similar robberies having occurred throughout Manitoba in particular, the R.M. of Teulon, Swan Lake First Nation, and the R.M. of St. Laurent. The robberies had all occurred between February 7th and February 14th.

On February 16th, the investigation led Major Crimes Unit investigators to the City of Brandon as suspects planned an additional robbery to a commercial premise. The Winnipeg Police Service Tactical Support Team was present to intervene and four adult male suspects were taken into custody without incident.

This investigation was supported through the assistance and cooperation with our Law Enforcement partners in the RCMP and RCMP Major Crimes Unit, the Manitoba First Nations Police, and The Brandon Police Service.

As a result of this investigative collaboration, Harmandeep Singh GILL, 26, of Brampton, Ontario; Ravdeep Singh GILL, 21, of Winnipeg; Jaskaran SINGH, 20, of Surrey, B.C.; and Dilpreet Singh SEKHON, 23, also of Surrey, B.C. , have been charged with Armed Robbery X 5, Disguise with intent X 4, and Theft Under $5,000.

All four were detained in custody.

Police Investigate Male Stabbed Numerous Times

Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN), Manitoba

On February 1 ^st , 2025, at approximately 11:40 AM, Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNP) were dispatched to the report of a stabbing at a residence on Bracken Dam Road In Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

When Officers arrived, they located an adult male with several injuries consistent with being stabbed. Emergency Medical Services arrived and provided medical assistance. Police learned that the altercation occurred at a different location not far from the victim’s location and that the suspect was still present.

Police attended the residence and contacted the occupants of the house; the suspect exited the residence and was arrested.

Donald Jay DEMCHYNSKI, 33-year-old of Opaskwayak Cree Nation, has been remanded into custody on the following charges:

· Aggravated Assault

· Assault with a weapon

Police Seek Public Assistance in Robbery

Swan Lake First Nation, Manitoba

On February 9, 2025, Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNP) officers responded to a report of a robbery with firearms.

Police responded to the Four Corners Gas Bar where it was learned that 4 unknown males robbed the business at gunpoint, the suspects took money and cigarettes and tried unsuccessfully to gain access to the safe. Suspects wore facemasks and black or grey clothing, brandishing pistols and a baseball bat. The left in a blue Mercedes Benz sedan like a 2017 or 2018 model C300. The vehicle had no front license plate and witnesses were unable to obtain a plate number.

Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspects, anyone with information is asked to contact the Manitoba First Nations Police. Attached are photographs from the Swan Lake Four Corners gas bar surveillance system.

Police Investigation into Sexual Relationship with Child Leads to Charges

Birdtail Sioux First Nation

On September 18, 2024, Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNP) received a complaint regarding an adult male involved in a sexual relationship with a young female.

MFNPS Criminal Investigation Unit (CSU) investigated the allegations, it was learned that the male was 27 years old, and the victim was 14 years old, the accused started a relationship through messages with the youth, and the investigation also revealed and confirmed sexual relations occurred between the accused and victim. Police executed a search warrant on the adult male's residence where numerous electronic devices were seized. Police also executed a warrant to obtain DNA from the adult male. The accused was arrested during the execution of the warrants. The accused will not be named to protect the identity of the victim.

A 27-year-old male from Birdtail Sioux First Nation was arrested and charged with the following;

· Sexual assault X3

· Sexual Interference X3

· Luring a child by telephone

· Breach of Prohibition order X7

The accused was remanded into custody but has since been released by the courts on further conditions.

Males Charged In Connection With Stabbing Incident

Birdtail Sioux First Nation

On December 31, 2024, Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNP) officers responded to a report of a stabbing victim who attended the Birdtail Health Center.

Police located a 28-year-old male suffering from severe stab wounds, the victim was transported to the Brandon Regional Health Centre, where he underwent surgery. The victim has since been discharged and is recovering. Police conducted a thorough investigation of the scene and recovered a knife, and a wooden club believed to have been used in the attack. The investigation revealed that the victim had been attacked during a dispute involving two family members. Police believe that alcohol played a factor in the incident. MFNP officers have arrested two suspects in connection with the incident:

James Donald Bunn, 43 years old, of Birdtail Sioux First Nation, has been charged with:

· Aggravated assault

Issak Lathaniel Keyshawn Bunn, 21 years old, of Birdtail Sioux First Nation, has been charged with:

· Attempted murder

Police Search for Male Charged with Stabbing Incident

Birdtail Sioux First Nation, Manitoba

On January 3, 2025, Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNP) officers received a report of a male with a stab wound being located on a road by public works employees.

Police located a male victim suffering from severe injuries and experiencing heavy blood loss, EMS was requested however due to the distance of an ambulance, the victim was transported to Russell Health Centre in a police vehicle. The victim received medical treatment and was stabilized. He is currently recovering from his injuries.

An investigation determined that the victim was stabbed by a family member, and an arrest warrant has been issued for, Shannon Christopher Shingoose, 40 years old, of Birdtail Sioux First Nation.

Shingoose has been charged with the following offences.

· Aggravated assault

· Assault with a weapon

MALE CHARGED WITH FIREARMS OFFENCES ALSO WANTED ON MURDER CHARGES

Sandy Bay First Nation, Manitoba

On January 9, 2025, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) received a report of an attempted arson at a local residence; witnesses provided details of a suspect vehicle that left the area.

Police observed the suspect vehicle on Hwy 50 near the community of Langruth. Police attempted to stop the vehicle; however, the vehicle continued and sped off. The vehicle led the Police into Sandy Bay, and after a short pursuit, the vehicle slid into the ditch, where a male was observed to exit and fled on foot.

The male was identified as Preston Whitford, who was also wanted in connection with a homicide that was under investigation by the RCMP. MFNP PSD Zion tracked the suspect to an abandoned mobile home, where the suspect is alleged to have threatened the Police with a firearm; the suspect eventually surrendered to Police. The weapon was later determined to be an imitation firearm.

Officers searched the vehicle and located an SKS assault-style firearm and a pellet handgun; the investigation revealed that Whitford had the firearms.

Preston Todd Dean WHITFORD, 30-year-old, of Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, was arrested and charged with the following offences;

· Unauthorized Possession of a firearm

· Unauthorized possession of a firearm when knowing possession is unauthorized

· Weapons possession contrary to order

· Resist arrest.

WHITFORD was also transferred to the Manitoba RCMP as part of thier homicide investigation.

“The Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) continues to deal with the tragic loss of Chief Doug Palson; family, friend, and colleague. Chief Palson was a remarkable leader, devoted public servant and beloved member of the policing community. He led with compassion, empathy and integrity, and was a tireless advocate for Indigenous-led, culturally safe, community-based policing. Chief Palson devoted his life’s work to public safety, justice and reconciliation.

In the days to come there will be a more formal tribute which will celebrate his life and his career in policing which spanned over 35 years.

The 10 First Nation communities which are policed by the MFNPS can rest assured that we will continue to serve and protect them with honour and respect. The Police Commission has named MFNPS Inspector Jason Colon Interim Chief of Police. We will carry on the work that Chief Palson had championed throughout his career in First Nation policing.”

Our priority remains the health and wellness of our employees and the safety of the communities we serve. At this time, we are limiting our comments to this written statement while we navigate through this difficult loss.

Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council Police Commission Media Release

With a heavy heart, the Manitoba First Nation Police Service shares the sudden and tragic news of a house fire that occurred earlier this morning at the residence of our Chief Doug Palson.

Portage la Prairie RCMP and Fire quickly responded to the scene, and once the fire was extinguished, investigators discovered human remains in the home.

Although the investigation is on-going, we believe that Chief Palson was the victim of this tragic incident. Manitoba First Nation Police Service is working closely alongside the Manitoba RCMP, and the Office of the Fire Commissioner during this process.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Chief Palson’s family as they deal with this tragedy. We are also sharing in the grief and loss which is being felt by the members of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service. We are all connected as a united police family at this time. Chief Palson was a passionate leader who loved our police service and its members who serve our 10 First Nation communities with pride and respect.

Traffic Stop Leads to Drugs and Firearms

Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Manitoba

On December 19, 2024, Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNP) conducted a traffic stop in the 700 block of Kiche Maskanow. Investigation revealed that the driver was on release conditions to live in Winnipeg and was on a curfew.

Police continued an investigation under the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Act that resulted in two other occupants, an adult male and an adult female, being arrested. A search of the vehicle was conducted, and Police located a loaded, 12-gauge shotgun, which had been altered, making it a prohibited firearm. Suspected cocaine and Canadian currency were also located and seized. The driver and two passengers were arrested.

Dustin Dean ZORN, 37-year-old of Winnipeg, has been remanded into custody with the following charges:

Possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking

Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000

Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized

Unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle

Possession of a firearm contrary to an order

Possession of a restricted or prohibited firearm

Careless storage of a firearm

Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

Fail to comply with release order

A 39-year-old male from Opaskwayak Cree Nation and a 42-year-old female from The Pas has been released on Undertakings with conditions to attend Court later. The following charges have been recommended to the Crown:

The Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) is proud to announce that Bently Scott, a Grade 6 student from Sgt. Tommy Prince School in Brokenhead Ojibway First Nation, is the winner of this year’s MFNPS Christmas Card Contest. Bently’s beautiful artwork was selected to be featured as the official MFNPS Christmas card, which will be shared with our community members, stakeholders, and policing partners across Manitoba.

In addition to this incredible honor, Bently’s achievement has earned a pizza party for his Grade 5 and 6 classmates, which will take place in January.

Bently’s artistic talent runs deep in his family. His mother, Sharon Ward-Assiniboine, shared that Bently inherited his skills from his grandfather, Cyril Assiniboine, a well-known artist. She also revealed that Bently’s spirit name, "He Lived Before," reflects the wisdom and inspiration he carries. His winning design was influenced by a tattoo his mother has, serving as a meaningful connection to their family’s traditions.

Bently’s family is deeply rooted in their cultural practices, and he is an active participant in these traditions as a fancy dancer. His creativity and cultural pride truly shone through in his artwork, making him a role model for his peers and a reflection of the strong spirit within the Brokenhead Ojibway community.

UPDATE Car Jacking Suspect Arrested

January 7, 2025:

UPDATE: Subsequent to this media release from December 18, 2024, David William CAMPBELL was located and arrested by the RCMP.

On November 27, 2024, Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNP) received a report of a vehicle being carjacked the evening prior in Opaskwayak Cree Nation. It was reported that the suspect used a firearm during the offence, which was discharged.

Police were attending to the complaint and located the stolen vehicle in a snowbank on Kiche Maskanow. Police found evidence and damage consistent with a firearm being discharged inside the vehicle. Police learned that two adult suspects requested a ride to a local residence when one of the males produced a firearm and demanded the victim’s belongings and her vehicle. One of the male suspects allegedly discharged the firearm in the vehicle, the vehicle stopped, and the victim was able to flee from the vehicle.

MFNP have identified the two suspects.

On December 15, Jewel Jayden WILSON-MCNABB, 25-year-old of Moose Lake, was arrested by RCMP in The Pas and has been remanded into custody on the following charges:

• Robbery with a firearm

• Forcible confinement

Police have issued a warrant for arrest for David William CAMPBELL, 20-year-old, from Moose Lake. CAMPBELL is charged with and is wanted for the following offences:

· Robbery with a firearm

· Forcible confinement

· Pointing a firearm

· Possession of a firearm when knowing possession is unauthorized

· Possession of a firearm contrary to an order

· Careless use of a firearm

· Discharge firearm while being reckless

· Disguised with intent to commit offence

· Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

David William CAMPBELL is described as aboriginal in appearance, approximately 6’1”, 190 pounds, and is believed to be in the areas of Opaskwayak Cree Nation, The Pas, or Moose Lake. He is considered to be armed and dangerous, and members of the public are encouraged to call MFNP or your local Police with any information on his whereabouts. Do not approach or engage with David William CAMPBELL if observed.

Proactive Traffic Enforcement Leads to Drug Seizure

On December 13, 2024, at approximately 4:30 am, Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNP) conducted a vehicle stop on Mission Road in Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

Police observed open alcohol containers in the vehicle, which resulted in the female driver completing a breath test; the results registered a “WARN.”

As the investigation continued, officers located a small can of pepper spray and a small amount of suspected cocaine. The female driver was arrested for possession of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance. A further search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of suspected heroin, over 100 grams of suspected cocaine, Canadian currency, and 58 cannabis oil vapes.

Alix BELILLE-ELLIS, 29 year-old, from Brampton, Ontario, has been remanded into custody and has been charged with:

• Possession for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine

• Possession of a controlled substance – heroin

• Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

• Possession of property obtained by crime less than $5000

Along with the above criminal charges, BELILLE-ELLIS has also been charged under the Cannabis Act for the following:

• Possession of illicit cannabis

• Possession over 30g of dried cannabis

• Possession of cannabis for the purpose of selling

Shooting Leads to Search Warrant and Multiple Arrests

Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN)

On December 9, 2024, at approximately 4:30 pm, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) in OCN received a report of a shooting incident in a residence on Bracken Dam Road in OCN. Upon arrival, officers located a 35-year-old male victim severely bleeding as a result of being shot. He was transported by EMS to the Pas Hospital and eventually air lifted to Winnipeg Health Science Center to be treated. He is currently in stable condition.

Investigation revealed - three suspects arrived at the residence, which was occupied by the victim and other persons, in a black Dodge Ram. Suspects forced their way inside and demanded property from the victim. During the incident the suspects discharged a firearm multiple times inside the residence and towards the victim. No one else was injured from this incident.

On December 10th, 2024, shortly after 12:00 pm, MFNP officers located the Dodge Ram at a residence on Whitebridge Road in OCN. The residence was surrounded and occupants advised to come out but refused. Attempts to convince the occupants to cooperate continued for several hours. MFNPS was assisted by the RCMP Emergency Response Team, K9 services, Remote Piloted Aircraft System and the Pas Detachment.

At approximately 5:30 pm, a search warrant for the residence was executed. Five occupants were taken into custody, two of which were responsible for the shooting on Bracken Dam Road. In relation to the shooting and search warrant, Jock Daniel Campbell, 30 years-old and Morgan Cree Blair, both from Moose Lake, Manitoba have been arrested and remanded into custody with the following charges:

• Break and enter to steal firearm

• Unauthorized possession of a firearm

• Discharge firearm while being reckless

• Robbery to steal a firearm

• Possession of a prohibited weapon when knowing possession unauthorized

• Weapon possession contrary to an order

• Unsafe storage of firearms

• Utter threats to a person

• Disguised with intent to commit offence

• Resist or obstruct police officer Campbell is also charged with:

• Point firearm

• Aggravated assault

• Discharge firearm with intent to commit offence

Blair is also charged with Mischief over $5000.00 In relation to the search warrant.

Raychelle DORION, 18 years-old, from Moose Lake - Kyle Head, 31 years-old, from the Pas and Amber Sawatzky, 35 years-old from OCN have been arrested and charged with the following charges:

• Unauthorized possession of a firearm

• Possession of a restricted firearm with ammo without license

• Unsafe storage of firearms

• Resist or obstruct police officer

Head was also arrested on an outstanding warrant for arrest.

Dorion and Head were remanded into custody. Sawatzky faces an additional charge of Possession of a Restricted Firearm with Ammunition

Without a License and was released from custody to appear in court at a later date.

It is believed the shooting was targeted and the suspects and victim are known to each other. The investigation is ongoing, and police expect additional charges.

Firearms, drugs, money and stolen property located in Search Warrant

Sandy Bay First Nation

On October 25, 2024, The Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) Sandy Bay detachment with the assistance of MFNPS Criminal Investigative Unit, RCMP Emergency Response Team and Brandon Police Service, executed a Firearms Search Warrant at a residence in the 300 block of Townsite Bay. This was in relation to a discharge firearm investigation conducted by the MFNPS Sandy Bay detachment.

Upon execution of the warrant, 5 individuals were taken into police custody from the residence. Officers subsequently located and seized:

• 3 firearms.
• Large amount of ammunition.
• 6 grams Cocaine with a street value of $600.00
• $4490 Canadian currency. • 3 stolen ATV’s.
• 3 stolen generators • 1 stolen vehicle

One 14-year-old female and one 18-year-old male were charged with Possess Property Obtained by Crime and released on an Appearance Notice for a future court date in Amaranth, Manitoba.

An arrest warrant has been issued for 19-year-old, James Allan Clifford Roulette of Sandy Bay First Nation. Roulette is described as 6’2”, 180 lbs, with black hair. Photo of Roulette attached. Roulette is facing the following charges:

• Unauthorized Possession of Firearm.
• Unsafe Storage of Firearm.
• Possession of Firearm contrary to Order.
• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime.
• Possession for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine.

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General Excellence in Law Enforcement Award / Medal

MFNPS Sergeant Kristen Tompsett Receives Award

On Thursday October 24th, the Manitoba Association of Chiefs of Police (MACP) held their annual Minister of Justice Excellence in Law Enforcement Awards Dinner in Winnipeg.

It was an honour to see Sgt Kristen Tompsett receive The Minister of Justice and Attorney General Excellence in Law Enforcement Award / Medal. During the ceremony, the Honourable Matt Wiebe, Manitoba’s Minister of Justice and Attorney General, presented Kristen with her award. Also on hand at the awards dinner was Premier Wab Kinew.

Sergeant Kristen Tompsett received the Outstanding Service Award for her extraordinary contributions to the betterment of Long Plain First Nation community, First Responder community and Manitoba Special Olympics community.

Sergent Tompsett is a 18 year member of the MFNPS and began her career in 2006. She was promoted to Corporal in 2010 and Sergeant in 2013. She has policed in the First Nation communities of Birdtail Sioux, Roseau River and Long Plain. In August of 2023 she took over the command of the Long Plain Detachement and supervises a team of 10 police officers, 2 clerks and 7 guards.

In 2024, she played a key role in addressing a drug-related crisis in Long Plain First Nation. Sgt. Tompsett is also a mental health advocate, leading mental health initiatives for first responders. Additionally, she is a dedicated supporter of athletes with intellectual disabilities, chairing the Law Enforcement Torch Relay committee since 2020 and raising significant funds and awareness for the cause.

MFNPS Investigates Serious Assault

Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Manitoba

On September 29 ^th , 2024, Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNP) were on patrol in Opaskwayak Cree Nation and were alerted by a group of people in a local parking lot that there was an assault.

Police attended to the area where they located a severely injured adult male who was unconscious and unresponsive. Police administered First Aid until EMS arrived, the male was transported to The Pas hospital for treatment, but due to his injuries he was later flown to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba where he remains in critical but stable condition.

Officers were able to review security footage in the area and determined that two suspects were involved with the assault.

Police located one of the suspects and was arrested. The suspect, a 17-year-old youth male, from Opaskwayak Cree Nation, was remanded into custody and has been charged with:

· Aggravated assault

· Assault with a weapon x2

· Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

On September 30 ^th , the subsequent investigation led officers to identify the second suspect.

On October 1 ^st , Members of the Manitoba First Nations Police, along with the assistance of the RCMP Emergency Response Team, RCMP K9 services, and RCMP RPAS, executed the search warrant and arrested the suspect at the residence.

A 16-year-old youth, from Opaskwayak Cree Nation, was arrested and remanded into custody facing charges of:

· Attempted murder

· Assault

· Uttering threats against a person

· Weapon possession contrary to an order

· Carrying concealed weapon

· Unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon

· Disguise with intent to commit offence

· Fail to comply with conditions of release order x4

It is believed that the victim was not known to the suspects prior to the assault. The investigation is continuing and police are asking anyone that may have information to contact police in Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

Brokenhead Ojibway Nation Has New Police Service

The Brokenhead Ojibway Nation and the Manitoba First Nation Police Service (MFNPS) hosted a signing ceremony today to celebrate the opening of the latest MFNPS detachment in the community and new era of public safety for the people of Brokenhead Ojibway Nation.

The Brokenhead Ojibway Nation (BON) is one of the latest First Nations to have the Manitoba First Nation Police Service as their police service of jurisdiction. The MFNPS officially began policing the community on October 1 ^st at 8:00 a.m. BON had previously been policed by the R.C.M.P. through their Selkirk detachment. The MFNPS has created a temporary detachment building in the community while plans for construction of a permanent building are forthcoming.

BON Chief Gordon Bluesky said that “This partnership has been a long time coming, and we are excited to see it come to fruition. Community safety has always been our priority, and we are confident that with the support and expertise of Manitoba First Nation Police Services, we will create a safer and more secure environment for all. We look forward to this new chapter of collaboration and are excited about the positive impact this will have on our community.”

MFNPS Chief of Police Doug Palson stated that “The members of the MFNPS, along with the Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council Police Commission, are proud to be the new police service for the people of BON. We are guided by the Seven Sacred Teachings and are committed to serving and protecting the community in a culturally respectful way through a trauma informed lens. The Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) officially became the police service of jurisdiction for Gambler First Nation on Tuesday October 1, 2024

Chief David LeDoux, Band Council members, MFNPS Chief of Police Doug Palson, the R.C.M.P., representatives from the Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council Police Commission, the province and federal governments were on hand today in Gambler First Nation to celebrate the transition of policing to the MFNPS.

Gambler First Nation Chief David LeDoux said, “I would like to thank everyone for making this happen. We are family and we are going to work together for the future.” Chief LeDoux went on to say, “This is a historic and important day for Gambler First Nation.”

MFNPS Chief of Police Doug Palson described October 1st as an important day for the MFNPS and Gambler First Nation: “The Manitoba First Nations Police Service is very honoured to now be Gambler First Nations’ police service. I would like to thank our public safety partners including Justice Manitoba, Public Safety Canada, and the RCMP for their support. Long Plain Detachment: Manitoba First Nations Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance in locating 13 year-old, Cameron Joshua BONE. Family contacted police on September 28 ^th , 2024 advising that they had not seen BONE in approximately 2 weeks. They advised that

The Manitoba First Nations Police Service is seeking the public's assistance in locating Chance Cordell Christopher DANIELS (23).

DANIELS currently has 2 Warrants for his arrest stemming from two separate incidents.

It is alleged that on March 31, 2024, DANIELS was involved in an altercation involving numerous individuals at a Long Plain First Nation residence. This altercation involved the use of bear spray against 3 victims.

DANIELS is facing charges of:

On April 24, 2024, police received a report that a female had been stabbed and required medical attention; EMS transported her with non-life-threatening injuries. DANIELS is facing the following charges in connection with that incident:

Police Deal with Impaired Drivers

Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Manitoba

On July 10, 2024, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) located two impaired drivers within a few hours in Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

Members of the Manitoba First Nations Police received a call at approximately 6:27 pm of a driver who was observed drinking alcohol while driving. Police located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop; the 38-year-old driver from The Pas failed the roadside screening device and was issued a ticket for unlawful transportation of liquor in a motor vehicle, a 90-day licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

A few hours later, at approximately 9:28 pm, police received a complaint of an erratic driver in the area of The Pas. The vehicle was located on Highway 10 in Opaskwayak. The 69-year-old driver from Woodlands, MB, also failed the roadside screening device and was issued a 90-day licence suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Impaired driving is a threat to community safety. We encourage the reporting of dangerous driving to the police.

New officers graduate from Police Cadet Training Program

The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) and the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) are congratulating 10 new officers on their completion of the Police Cadet Training program.

Today’s graduating class included eight recruits from the LPS: Taylor Althouse, Garrett Chiddle, Denver Gould, Eva Klassen, Harley Sims, Jaspreet Singh, Steele Stef and Laine Wilson; and two cadets from the MFNPS: Kyle Bauman and Jarrod Kyca.

All graduates are newly hired police officers who have spent the past 22 weeks sharpening their front-line policing skills in preparation for careers in public safety.

Awards presented at this afternoon’s graduation ceremony include:

Manitoba First Nations Police Service Chief Doug Palson also offered congratulations to the graduates and asked them to remember the seven sacred teachings of truth, honesty, wisdom, humility, respect, courage and love.

“It starts with yourself and self-respect,” he says. “How you carry yourself, how you interact with the community, with your family, with your friends, and the people you're serving and working with. And while courage is self-explanatory when it comes to policing, you also have to have the courage to stand up to do what's right. Always do the right thing and focus on being kind.”

Chief Palson also congratulated Lethbridge Polytechnic on its Police Cadet Training program and the partnerships the institution has developed over the years.

Formed in collaboration with the core police services of southern Alberta, Lethbridge Polytechnic’s Police Cadet Training program is designed to meet industry demand and ensure newly hired officers are well-trained in both hard skills, such as firearms use, and soft skills, such as interpersonal communication, ethical accountability and teamwork.

It's the only police training program of its kind in Canada.

“It’s an honour to assist in preparing recruits to serve their communities and launching them on their policing careers,” says Trudi Mason, dean of Lethbridge Polytechnic’s Centre for Justice and Human Services . “We are also proud of the partnerships that have developed between the polytechnic and policing services in our regions and beyond. It’s one more way to live the institution’s vision of embracing our responsibility to students, employees and partners who look to us for learning, opportunity and belonging.”

Upcoming recruit classes will be offered by Lethbridge Polytechnic starting on July 15.

Police investigate Robbery

On June 21, 2024, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) was called to an assault on Amisk Crescent in Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Manitoba.

Members of the Manitoba First Nation Police Service attended the scene. They found two males suffering from stab wounds in the upper body area, reporting that they were confronted by a group of individuals who attacked them and took their beer. The male victims were transported to hospital by ambulance with serious injuries; they are now stable.

Police are actively investigating this matter and are seeking the public's assistance to obtain information regarding this incident.

Assault leads to search warrant and drug charges

On June 15, 2024, members of the Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNPS) were investigating a domestic assault that led to a search warrant and further charges for drugs and weapons possession on Lake Road in Sandy Bay First Nation, Manitoba.

Members of the Manitoba First Nation Police Service received a call from a female reporting that she was assaulted. While Police were investigating the assault, Police obtained a search warrant under the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act. Police searched a residence on Lake Road and seized 13 firearms, numerous types of ammunition, drug paraphernalia consistent with drug trafficking, approximately 35.1 pounds of Cannabis, 6.2 grams of suspected cocaine and close to $24,000.00.

A 63-year-old male from Sandy Bay was charged with the following offences:

· Possess Cannabis for the Purpose of Selling

· Possess Cannabis for the Purpose of Distribution

· Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking

· Assault

· Uttering Threats

· Careless Storage of a Firearm X 9

The accused cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim of the domestic assault.

MALE CHARGED WITH FIREARMS OFFENCES AFTER POLICE PURSUIT

On June 11, 2024, Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) received a report that a stolen truck was driving in the community with multiple occupants inside with a firearm.

Members of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service, on general duty patrol, located a vehicle that matched the description of the one reported stolen travelling on Main Road. The vehicle fled from police at a high rate of speed; however, police were able to identify the driver. Police located the vehicle outside of a residence on Lake Road South. After a short foot pursuit, the driver was arrested without further incident. The truck was stolen from Carmen, Manitoba.

Police searched the area of the arrest and located a loaded 22-250 rifle.

Jordan Kenneth BEAULIEU (29-year-old) of Sandy Bay was held in custody and charged with the following offences;

· Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000

· Unauthorized possession of a firearm

· Possession of a firearm when knowing possession is unauthorized

· Unsafe storage of a firearm

· Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

· Possession of a firearm/ammunition in a motor vehicle

· Weapon possession contrary to order

· Fail to comply with release order condition x2

Male arrested in Armed and Barricaded

On June, 1, 2024, shortly after 10:00 PM, Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) officers from the Sandy Bay detachment responded to a weapons incident in which a male was in possession of a firearm and threatening to shoot it.

Upon arrival, officers established a perimeter and were able to safely direct occupants from the residence. Additional information revealed this male had discharged the firearm earlier in the day and was threatening to have a shootout with police. The male refused to exit the residence.

MFNPS K9 unit and Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (drone) operator were deployed to assist.

The RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) was also requested and attended.

Shortly after 2:30 AM, ERT and MFNPS K9 unit entered the residence and located the male and a loaded firearm.

Joseph Cam Sutherland, 25-years-old, of Sandy Bay First Nation was arrested and charged with:

· Unauthorized possession of firearm.

· Intentionally discharge firearm x2.

· Possess weapon while prohibited x2.

· Utter threats.

· Possession of prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition.

· Possession of firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized.

· Obstruct peace officer.

· Fail to comply with release order.

Sutherland was remanded into custody for a court appearance on June 3, 2024 in Portage La Prairie Provincial Court.

Police Execute Drug Warrant

On May 30, 2024, Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS), with the assistance of the RCMP Emergency Response Team, executed a search warrant at a residence on Kiche Maskenow in Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

Police took numerous subjects into custody. A search of the residence led to the discovery of 255g of prescription pills, meth, cocaine, and unknown substances. Also located were various types of ammunition, a homemade conducted energy weapon (Taser), and multiple different items associated with drug trafficking, including scales, cell phones, Canadian currency, baggies, "score" sheets, packaging materials, and other items.

A 65-year-old female, 47-year-old male, and 50-year-old male, all from Opaskwayak Cree Nation, have been released by way of Undertaking to appear in Court at a later date and will be charged with:

· Trafficking – Cocaine

· Trafficking – Methamphetamine

· Unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon

· Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

· Unsafe storage of ammunition

The incident is still under investigation, and several warrants for arrest will be issued for other suspects involved.

Police Charge Scooter Driver with Impaired Driving

On May 30, 2024, members of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) located an impaired driver in Birdtail Sioux First Nation.

MFNPS members were on patrol and located a scooter on its side with the driver still in place. Police checked on the driver for injuries. The driver had no signs of injury; however, he was showing signs of impairment due to alcohol; as a result, the driver was arrested for impaired operation of a conveyance. The driver was transported to the detachment, where he provided samples of his breath with results well over three times the legal limit.

The 35-year-old male from Birdtail Sioux was released on an appearance notice to appear in provincial court at a later date.

Police execute Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) Search Warrant

On May 30, 2024, officers from the Long Plain detachment executed a CDSA search warrant in the 100 block of Dakota Trail located in Long Plain First Nation.

Officers located:

· 1.54 grams of cocaine (crack)

· 3.56 grams of cocaine (powder)

· $554 Canadian currency

34 year-old, Marcel Peters of Long Plain First Nation was arrested and charged with:

· CDSA 5(1) Traffick cocaine

· CDSA 5(2) Possess cocaine for the purpose of trafficking

· Possess proceeds obtained by crime under $5000

Peters was detained into custody for a court appearance in Portage La Prairie Provincial Court on May 31, 2024.

Officer Threatened With Firearm

On May 30, 2024, at approximately 9;30 AM, officers received a disturbance complaint at a residence in the 300 block of Yellowquill Trail in Long Plain First Nation.

Upon arrival, the officer interacted with the male causing the disturbance at which time he became uncooperative, brandished a firearm and threatened to kill the officer. The officer reacted by unholstering their firearm and provided verbal direction to the male to which he eventually complied.

The male was arrested without further incident.

48-year-old, Timothy Myran was arrested and charged with:

· Utter threats x2.

· Possess weapon.

· Use of firearm in the commission of an offence.

· Common nuisance.

· Assault peace officer.

Myran was detained into custody for a court appearance in Portage La Prairie Provincial Court on May 31, 2024.

OCN Community Member & Police Save Female From River

On May 26, 2024, members of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) were called to assist a female who was on the Cornelius Bignell Bridge in Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

At approximately 8:16 PM, members of the Manitoba First Nation Police Service received a report that there was a young female on the Cornelius Bignell Bridge. Police immediately attended the area and found the female under the train bridge; as Police talked to the female, her grip slipped, and she fell into the river. A bystander and MFNP member entered the water and safely returned her to shore with the help of more bystanders. The female was transported to the hospital as a precaution.

Bear Spray Attacks

On May 25, 2024, Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) Police were called to two bear mace incidents in Opaskwayak Cree Nation

At approximately 8:35 PM, Police were called to a residence on Resolutions Drive where a group of males discharged bear spray inside a residence. Police attended immediately and found multiple victims who required medical assistance due to exposure. EMS were called to assist, but no suspects were located.

A short time later, at approximately 10:30 PM, Police were dispatched for a similar incident at the Gordon Lathlin Arena, where the annual Canuck Fair was taking place. Police attended and again found multiple victims that had been bear sprayed. No suspects were located.

On May 26, 2024, at approximately 1:15 AM, Police located and arrested a youth suspect. He is held in custody and will be appearing in Court at a later date. The male youth accused was charged with:

· Possession of a weapon contrary to an order

· Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

· Administering noxious thing

· Mischief under $5000

· Fail or refuse to comply with a sentence or disposition.

The youth also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for failing to comply with the conditions of his release order. The youth cannot be identified as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Nicole Antoine has been selected as the winner of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service’s Seven Sacred Teachings art contest.

Today, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service presented Nicole Antoine with an iPad Pro in recognition of her winning submissions to the Seven Sacred Teachings art contest. The Manitoba First Nations Police Service had invited Indigenous artists in Manitoba to submit their digital artwork for the contest which began in February 2024. The theme of the contest was the Seven Sacred Teachings, also known as the Teachings of the Seven Grandfathers, which are a set of teachings on human conduct towards others.

The Seven Sacred Teachings are the core values of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service:

“In the spirit of accountability and transparency, we embrace the Seven Sacred Teachings as a way of being, reaffirming them as our core values, and apply the teachings in the work we do.”

Chief Palson:

“We are proud to have Nicole’s beautiful artwork become an important part of our organisation’s internal culture. The Seven Teachings inspire and guide us in all we do as a First Nations police service.”

The MFNPS will use and display Nicole’s artwork in publications as well as web and social media platforms.

Ontario Man Charged With Trafficking

Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation

On April 29, 2024 shortly before 9:00PM, officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle which contained four occupants.

During the stop, officers formed the grounds and detained the occupants for a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) investigation.

Officers located suspected cocaine and crack cocaine in possession of the driver and other items associated with drug trafficking in the vehicle. Over 100 grams of suspected cocaine and crack cocaine were seized.

26-year-old Sicetus AKHINAGBA of Brampton, Ontario was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine. He was held in custody to appear in Portage La Prairie court on April 30, 2024.

The other occupants were released without charges.

Two youths Arrested in Forcible Confinement Incident

On April 27th, 2024, at approximately 4:00 PM, officers received a call involving a female being held hostage with a firearm. Officers immediately atended and upon arrival learned two suspects had fled on foot.

RCMP Dog Services atended and began tracking the suspects. Both suspects were subsequently located and arrested. They were found to be in possession of a large quantity of suspected methamphetamine, cocaine, fentanyl, and heroin as well as Canadian currency.

Two youths, aged 15, both from Ontario, have been charged with multiple offences including:

• Pointing a firearm

• Unauthorized possession of a firearm

• Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

• Carrying concealed weapon

• Forcible Confinement

• Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000

• Possession for the purpose of trafficking – Cocaine

• Possession for the purpose of trafficking – Methamphetamine

• Possession for the purpose of trafficking – Fentanyl

• Possession for the purpose of trafficking – Heroin

Both were detained in custody with a future court appearance in The Pas, Manitoba.

Police Save Dog From Drowning

On April 10, 2024, members of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) were called to assist in the rescue of a dog that broke through the ice in Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

Members of the Manitoba First Nation Police Service received a report from RCMP telecoms that a dog had fallen through the ice on the Saskatchewan River and was having difficulty getting out of the water. MFNP members requested other resources, but they were unavailable. Police found the dog approximately 100 feet from the shore. Police could see that the dog was struggling to get out of the water, so they located a canoe nearby with the assistance of two youths. Police used the canoe to cross the water and ice and rescue the dog. Police also used a thermal heat blanket from the patrol unit to help warm the dog once it was back on shore.

With the assistance of The Pas fire department, the dog was put into the patrol unit and returned to the detachment to dry off, eat, and get a well-deserved rest.

School Bus Driver Arrested for Impaired Driving

On April 15, 2024, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) responded to a report of an impaired driver operating a school bus in Waywayseecappo First Nation.

Members of the Manitoba First Nation Police Service responded to a report of a possible impaired school bus driver who was operating a school bus with children were on board on Procure Road. Police located a male driver and determined that he was under the influence of alcohol. The driver was arrested for Impaired operation by alcohol and transported to the detachment, where he provided samples of his breath that resulted in readings that were double the legal limit.

The adult male was released on an appearance notice to attend court at a later date.

On April 7, 2024, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) responded to a complaint of a break and enter in progress in Big Eddy area in Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

Members of the Manitoba First Nation Police Service were called too a residential break and enter, it was reported that no one was supposed to be in the residence but flashlights were seen inside. Police were in the area and attended immediately however according to neighbors 2 suspects ran from the residence just before Police arrival. The owner reports that one shotgun was stolen from the gun locker. Patrols of the area for possible suspects were negative.

Police are actively investigating this matter and are seeking the publics assistance for information regarding this incident.

Impaired Driver Leads to Drugs & Firearm Charges

On April 7, 2024, members of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) observed a traffic infraction, a traffic stop was initiated, which led to drug charges in Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

Members of the Manitoba First Nation Police Service were conducting proactive traffic enforcement when a vehicle was observed to commit a traffic infraction. Police stopped the vehicle, the driver's reactions led Police to suspect that she was impaired by alcohol; the driver failed a roadside sobriety test and was arrested. Police observed open liquor in the vehicle and arrested two male passengers; one of the passengers became combative and resisted arrest. Upon search of the vehicle, Police located and seized a quantity of suspected Methamphetamine, a small sum of cash, a homemade impact weapon and a replica handgun. The second passenger was also arrested.

The adult female driver was released on an undertaking to appear in court later to face charges relating to the weapons and driving offences.

Daniel CAMPBELL of Moose Lake has been charged with the following offences;

· Possession for the purposes of trafficking Methamphetamine

· Carry concealed weapon

· Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose x 2

· Possession of a firearm contrary to order

· Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000

· Uttering threats against a person x 2

Brennan GENAILLE of Moose Lake has been charged with the following offences;

· Possession for the purposes of trafficking Methamphetamine

· Carry concealed weapon

· Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose X2

· Possession of a firearm contrary to order

· Failing to comply with undertaking condition

· Carry liquor in a motor vehicle contrary to the Liquor Gaming and cannabis control act

Execution of Arrest Warrant Leads to Drugs and Weapons

On April 3, 2024, members of the Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNPS) arrested a male with an outstanding arrest warrant, which led to further charges for drugs and weapons possession in Sandy Bay First Nation, Manitoba.

Members of the Manitoba First Nation Police Service were on patrol and located a male who had an outstanding arrest warrant for Failing to Attend Court. Police approached the male and advised him that he was under arrest for the warrant; the male immediately resisted. Officers had to deploy a Taser to assist in taking the man into custody. Once the male was safely secured in a patrol unit, Police searched a bag that had been the suspect's possession and located a 12" machete, suspected methamphetamine, and items consistent with drug trafficking.

Edmond Raymond Austin SPENCE (30) was charged with the following offences;

· Resist Arrest

· Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose

· Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine

In addition to the above charges, the arrest warrant included previous charges of;

· Resist Arrest

· Fail to Attend Court

On March 30, 2024, members of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) were conducting traffic enforcement, which led to drug charges in Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

Members of the Manitoba First Nation Police Service were conducting proactive traffic enforcement to ensure drivers' sobriety. Police stopped a vehicle, observed open liquor in the car and attempted to arrest the male passenger; he became combative and resisted arrest. The female driver provided the Police with false identification; she was also arrested. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, Police located and seized a large quantity of suspected methamphetamine as well as a loaded prohibited firearm in the car.

As a result of this incident, On March 31, 2024, MFNPS members executed a search warrant on a residence on Kiche Maskanow that was associated with the male passenger, resulting in another firearm seizure at the residence.

Shane Joseph KNUTSON (33yo), of Opaskwayak Cree Nation, has been charged with multiple firearm and drug-related offences, including:

• Unsafe storage of a firearm

• Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

• Carrying a concealed weapon

• Unauthorized possession of a firearm

• Unauthorized possession of a firearm while knowing its possession is unauthorized

• Possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle

• Possession of a firearm with ammo readily available

• Possession of a weapon obtained by crime

• Possession of a weapon contrary to an order

• Possession of ammunition contrary to an order

• Resist Arrest

Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Manitoba

On March 16, 2024, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) responded to Mikisew Street in Opaskwayak Cree Nation regarding reports of gunshots. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Members of the Manitoba First Nation Police Service attended to the scene and confirmed that there was damage consistent with a gunshot. Homeowners told Police that the subjects were seen running from the area toward the school. RPAS Drone was deployed, which assisted in the apprehension of multiple subjects; they were later released because there was no evidence to support charges at this time.

Police are actively investigating this matter and are seeking the public's assistance to obtain information regarding this incident.

Police believe that this was an isolated incident.

Female Attacked by Dogs in Waywayseecappo First Nation

Waywayseecappo First Nation: On February 24, 2024 around 4:00 A.M., a 22 year old female from Waywayseecappo First Nation was walking alone on Procure Road in the community when she was attacked by a group of dogs. The victims clothing was ripped away and she sustained numerous dog bites. The victim was able to scream for help at which time other community members came to her aid and chased the dogs away.

The victim was transported to Russell Health Care in Russell, Manitoba where she was admitted for her injuries. She is currently in stable condition.

On February 25, 2024, Waywayseecappo First Nation Safety Officers (WFNSO) along with MFNPS officers attended to a residence in the community where 3 of the dogs responsible for the attack were located. WFNSO seized 2 dogs without incident but had to put the other dog down.

This incident is still under investigation.

Male Stabbed in Roseau River First Nation

Roseau River First Nation: On February 21, 2024 just before 7:00 p.m., officers attended to an address in the C200 block of Roseau River First Nation in regards to an assault complaint.

Upon arrival officers located a 34-year-old male victim from the community who had been stabbed multiple times. The victim was airlifted by Stars in critical condition to the Health Science Center in Winnipeg. His condition was later upgraded to stable.

Cory Littlejohn, 19-years-old, from Roseau River First Nation was arrested at the scene and charged with:

· Aggravated assault

· Assault with weapon

· Possess weapon for dangerous purpose

Littlejohn was remanded into custody for a future court date.

On February 4, 2024, at approximately 8:30am, Roseau River members received a report of a male lying on the ground in a backyard in the community.

Officers along with EMS attended to this location. A 39-year-old male was transported to De Salaberry District Hospital in St.Pierre-Jolys, MB where he was pronounced deceased.

The cause of death remains under investigation as we wait the results of the autopsy.

Serious Assault Investigation

Waywayseecappo First Nation: On January 23, 2024, shortly after 5:00am, officers attended to a residence in the community to investigate an assault.

Upon arrival, officers located a female suffering from serious upper body injuries. She was initially transported by ambulance to Russell Hospital but due to her condition had to be taken to Neepawa hospital. She was subsequently airlifted by Stars to the Health Science Center in Winnipeg for treatment. She remains in critical condition.

Officers arrested the suspect at the scene and he was transported to the Waywayseecappo detachment.

Derek Mecas, 52 years of age, from Waywayseecappo First Nation has been charged with:

· Aggravated Assault

· Fail to comply with release order

Mecas was remanded into custody with future appearance date.

The RCMP D Divison Major Crimes Unit and Forensic Identification Service provided assistance on this investigation.

On January 23, 2024, at approximately 8:45 pm, Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) responded to a report of an injured male at a residence located in Birdtail Sioux First Nation.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the 40-year-old male, from Birdtail Sioux First Nation, who was pronounced deceased on scene.

The matter is being investigated as a homicide.

Sandy Bay Detachment (Sandy Bay First Nation, Manitoba) T he Manitoba First Nations Police Service is seeking the publics assistance in locating 3 men wanted in connection with a January 3, 2024 shooting incident in Sandy Bay First Nation.

WANTED: 28-year-old Keith Douglas RACETTE is wanted in connection with the previously reported shooting incident in Sandy Bay First Nation on January 3, 2024. RACETTE is charged with Break, Enter and commit, Aggravated Assault and possession of a weapon.

WANTED: 31-year-old Jesse Myles ST. PAUL is wanted in connection with the previously reported shooting incident in Sandy Bay First Nation on January 3, 2024. ST. PAUL is charged with Break, Enter and commit, Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Weapon and Failing to Comply with release order.

WANTED: 36-year-old Gregory James Lee SPENCE is wanted in connection with the previously reported shooting incident in Sandy Bay First Nation on January 3, 2024. Sandy Bay First Nation, Manitoba: Police are investigating a home invasion incident; one male was assaulted with minor injuries in Sandy Bay First Nation, Manitoba.

On January 3, 2024, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) responded to a 911 hang-up call on Center Road in Sandy Bay First Nation.

MFNPS officers attended to the scene and located a male with facial injuries who had also been sprayed with bear spray. It was reported that multiple suspects entered the home and assaulted the victim; the suspects had firearms and used bear spray upon entry. The suspects lit a fire before fleeing the scene. The fire was then quickly extinguished. EMS was requested for the occupants. The victim was treated on scene.

Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation

On December 28, 2023 just before 7:00 PM, officers received a phone call about a male who had been was assaulted in the 100 block of Townsite Bay.

Upon arrival officers met with an adult male victim who related 3 adult suspects attended to his residence and demanded money. The suspects entered his residence and began assaulting him. During the assault one suspect produced a knife and attempted to stab the victim.

The victim received a laceration to his hand. The suspects robbed the victim of an undisclosed amount of money and fled the residence. The victim was transported to hospital to have his injury treated.

Warrants for arrest have been issued for the 3 suspects:

Salita Jean Beaulieu, 27 year old female from Sandy Bay First Nation is wanted for Robbery with a weapon and Aggravated Assault.

Ambrielle Angel Beaulieu, 21 year old female from Sandy Bay First Nation is wanted for Robbery with a weapon.

Landon Dwayne Desmarais, 18 year old male from Sandy Bay First Nation is wanted for Robbery with a weapon. No photo available for Landon Desmarais at this time.

Police continue to investigate this incident. The suspects are considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached.

Manitoba Public Insurance offers two options of a new specialty licence plate to raise money for the families of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people. Each plate costs $70, with $30 going to Ka Ni Kanichihk, a Winnipeg resource centre that offers programs to Indigenous communities.

Police investigate break & enter that leads to drug charges .

Waywayseecappo First Nation, Manitoba: On December 10, 2023, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) responded to a break-and-enter in progress at a home that led to drug charges in Waywayseecappo First Nation.

Members of the Manitoba First Nation Police Service attended to the residence. They spoke to the homeowner, who stated that the suspect broke a window to gain access to the residence but left just before the Police arrived. Police were able to track the suspect to a nearby abandoned residence. During the arrest, Police located drug trafficking paraphernalia, a large quantity of cash with individually wrapped packages of suspected cocaine in individual bags with a total weight of 8.5 grams.

The suspect was arrested and charged with the following offences:

· Break, Enter with intent,

· Possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking,

The suspect is a youth and cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Police Investigate Arson, One Male Charged

December 19, 2023

Waywayseecappo First Nation, Manitoba: On December 15, 2023, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) responded to a report of a structure fire at a home in Waywayseecappo First Nation.

Officers of the Manitoba First Nation Police Service attended to the scene and found the house fully engulfed in flames. Police confirmed no persons were inside either. Police followed up with the homeowner and witnesses, which resulted in the suspect's identification. The suspect was also involved in another mischief unrelated to the arson at another residence, with which he has been charged.

Police have arrested Kelvin Joseph HAPA, 33 years old; HAPA has been charged with the following offence:

• Arson – cause damage to property

• Mischief to property under $5000

• Assault with a weapon

• Operate a conveyance in a manner that is dangerous to the public

On December 14, 2023, a media release was issued in regards to a vehicle shot at in Long Plain First Nation. At that time a warrant for arrest was issued for Marcel Blair Peters (Peters), for the following offences:
