Serious Assault Investigation

Waywayseecappo First Nation: On January 23, 2024, shortly after 5:00am, officers attended to a residence in the community to investigate an assault.


Upon arrival, officers located a female suffering from serious upper body injuries. She was initially transported by ambulance to Russell Hospital but due to her condition had to be taken to Neepawa hospital. She was subsequently airlifted by Stars to the Health Science Center in Winnipeg for treatment. She remains in critical condition.


Officers arrested the suspect at the scene and he was transported to the Waywayseecappo detachment.


Derek Mecas, 52 years of age, from Waywayseecappo First Nation has been charged with:


·       Aggravated Assault

·       Fail to comply with release order


Mecas was remanded into custody with future appearance date.


The RCMP D Divison Major Crimes Unit and Forensic Identification Service provided assistance on this investigation.
