Long Plain First Nation, Manitoba — September 3, 2025

The Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council Police Commission is pleased to announce the appointment of Jason Colon as Chief of Police for the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) following an extensive national search facilitated by MNP.

Chief Colon brings a wealth of experience, integrity, and community-first leadership to the role and a vision for policing that balances accountability with compassion. We are confident he will serve with humility and exceptional leadership that is respectful and responsive to the culture, priorities and needs of MFNPS served communities.

Chief Colon has served as Interim Chief since January 2025, after the sudden passing of late Chief of Police Doug Palson, providing stability and leadership during a period of transition. Prior to that, he held an Inspector role with MFNPS and senior and frontline roles with the Blood Tribe Police Service, Dakota Ojibway Police Service, and Winnipeg Police Service, building more than 27 years of diverse policing experience across First Nations and municipal contexts.

He holds a Masters of Executive Police Leadership and a Bachelor of Policing from Charles Sturt University, alongside executive-level training from the Canadian Police College, Edmonton Police Service and Dalhousie University. He also serves on several national and provincial policing boards and committees, including the Canadian and Manitoba Associations of Chiefs of Police.

Jason Colon is dedicated to guiding the Manitoba First Nations Police Service into its next chapter, honouring the wisdom of past leaders while advancing a vision of modern, community-based policing that supports healing, growth, and the empowerment of First Nations people.

“As I begin my role as Chief of Police, I am dedicated to promoting modern, community-based policing focused on compassion and cultural awareness. Together with our team and partners, we will address public safety needs and support First Nations communities across Manitoba.” Chief of Police Jason Colon

We also take this moment to honour the late Chief of Police Doug Palson for his years of dedicated service and mentorship and whose remarkable leadership, humility, and commitment to our Nations set a lasting standard for MFNPS. His spirit of integrity and care continues to guide our service and the communities we serve.

A swearing-in ceremony will be held at a later date.

The Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) is proud to announce that we now have full deployment and use of Axon body-worn cameras at all our 12 detachments. In 2025, we began a systematic deployment of this important technology one detachment at a time. The adoption of body-worn cameras represents a significant step forward in enhancing transparency, accountability, and community trust in policing. These devices provide an accurate and objective record of interactions between MFNPS officers and community members, strengthening public confidence while supporting officer safety and professionalism. “Body-worn cameras are an important tool that will help us continue building strong, positive relationships with the communities we serve,” said Chief of Police Jason Colon. The MFNPS utilizes this technology in a way that reflects our values and priorities. Training has been provided to officers to ensure responsible and effective use, aligned with best practices and the highest standards of policing. The Manitoba First Nations Police Service remains committed to modernization and strengthening trust with the communities we serve through innovative tools, professional excellence, and cultural respect.
