Break and Enter leads to Assault Police and Resist Arrest charges
Opaskwayak Cree Nation

On May 15, 2026, shortly before 6:00 pm, the Manitoba First Nations Police Service in Opaskwayak Cree Nation received a call from an off-duty officer advising that an adult male was actively attempting to break into his residence. The officer advised that the suspect, who is known to the officer, was also attempting to assault him.
Officers responded immediately and learned that the suspect had fled the area. The off-duty officer, who was home with his spouse, was not physically injured. Police deployed additional resources including the MFNP Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) and Police Dog Services (PSD). After a short time, the suspect was located at a nearby residence and refused to cooperate with Police commands. After several minutes of continuing to resist arrest, officers were able to deploy oleoresin capsicum (OC spray) to safely bring the suspect into custody.
Once arrested, the suspect continued to be aggressive and uncooperative during the transport to the office, and during lodging in prisoner cells.
Police spoke to the off-duty member and learned that the suspect had attended the home and knocked on the door. Not knowing who was knocking, the officer opened the door. At this time, the suspect pushed him inside the residence and tried to instigate a fight. The officer was able to push him back outside at which point he called Police.
The suspect is currently bound by a Release Order from an incident on April 12th, 2026, where he was also charged with resisting arrest and assaulting and off duty peace officer.
Garth Preston CARRIERE, 46, of Cumberland House Saskatchewan, has been remanded into custody with the following charges:
